Hit a log - Insurance Claim??

OMG, Allstate...entirely a different scenario.

I had them for 32 years. He was my father's agent when I was 18, so he got me in. Grandpa had his insurance canceled when he turned 65, and the Allstate agent brought him in too, even at a cost savings.

He had my house, car, boat, RV, etc. Then he died.

They assigned me a new agent. About that time my son turned 16 so I tried to bring him in like my Dad did. To make a long story short he screwed us over big time. In talking with another allstate agent I was told that the agents have some personal leverage and they can upcharge at their heart's content. Get you in cheap then turn the screws later.

So, I switched to the new agent and got my old prices back.

Then he died. The new agent they assigned me - same old crap.

If an Allstate agent offered me free insurance I wouldn't take it.

Yea, had that experience with my last independent agent. Jumped around with a few different company's, but same agency and the rate just kept going up. Independent agent passed away, never heard from the parent agency so I started shopping and saved $1500/yr. I realized that insurance is just something that you need to keep shopping.

NBOA was less than half on what I had. with better coverage. Got the tip on this
forum.

I had a similar experience with Allstate. Was with them for 20 years and never paid my premiums late. Found they were raping me with a sandpaper pipe! Switched everything to Geico and saved 4k on car insurance alone. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to Allstate! The good hands people only give their loyal customers 1 finger!

I see your in NY. Actually all agents get the same rates from each company as they are filed and fixed by NYS insurance dept....It is to prevent just what you had heard. That being said it is possible they may use a "sister" company. Liberty Mutual is the standard company but Safeco is the lower cost company for example ...If your loss history and credit score are good you can get Safeco...If not you stay with Liberty....You were told a lie by the "other agent". FACT.

The fact is that after 32 years with the company he put me in the "risk pool". He charged me an obscene amount of money just to "join" the pool, and required CASH. Wouldn't take a check and when I handed it over to him he put it right in his wallet - right in front of me.

The "other agent" said it was legal, but in his opinion not ethical, and he wouldn't have done it. So I quit the %$#& guy and went with the "other agent" (also allstate) and my rates went down, back to where they were.

I was so incensed by the affair that I wrote a certified letter to the CEO of allstate and to my surprise I even got a return phone call from him. He stood by his agent and said that it was within his power to do that. It was his call. I told him it was MY call to fire him.

I have not had an insurance claim in over 50 years, my credit score is 820, and I pay my insurance for a year in full. I didn't owe any money back then either so my credit score was probably OK back then.

When the "other agent" retired, they assigned me a new agent and immediately my premiums went up again. Not by the usual yearly increase, but by a LOT.

Those are MY facts. I didn't hear them I lived them.

This sounds like it was a long time ago?
Cash has been prohibited with my companies for years...at least 15 or more.
You had a dishonest agent (s) no question.... Allstate is not a company I would use.
NYS dept of Financial services does not fool around, they would have been glad to fry him, as they operate on fines...not taxpayer money.

With diminishing deductible I'm now down to $zero, so it wouldn't cost me a dime. But I would have to weigh the impact on the future deductible, plus any possible increase in premiums.

I guess I would be inclined to eat the cost and keep the future impact down. Nothing better than an insurance policy with no claims and a perfect record.

Now, if it were a collision that amounted to tens of thousands, my opinion would be different.

Also, since my auto and homeowners are with the same company, it could end up catastrophic.

I advise against having vessel insurance at the same place as your home and auto. It is a mistake to have anything "yacht certified" insured with the likes of Allstate, NW, SF, etc. Keep your hobby separate from what you need to live and get to work...

Dad got me my first policy in 1968. He was an awesome agent. At that time IMHO allstate was the best around.

The "issue" with the mother*&^% agent was in about 1998. My last encounter with %^&*allstate was about 2011, when they raised my cost for no reason, when the agent retired and I got a new one.

The original mother $%^& has a big boat. Whenever I see him out in the river I wake him. Sorry for being a %$#@, but there are few things that make my blood boil.

BTW....BEH....
Actually it is the reverse, If you have other lines (supporting business) you are looked on MORE favorably than a mono line customer. Do I sound like a broker? Since 1978.

Certainly, BUT, rarely do the companies offering home and auto offer yacht policies in my experience. It may vary by state. I also want a marine insurance broker with experience to avoid situations like GFC experienced with Allstate...

Yes I accept your opinion. But are you an insurance agent, a financial advisor or a lawyer? Credentials trumps opinions.

FWIW, I switched from Safeco to Allstate (not in NY though). I don't get the impression that long term customers are awarded from insurance companies. Maybe I am wrong, but disappointed as I was with my last agency for 16 years.

I will be checking out NBOA though. Bought the boat at the same time I was switching insurance, so it all came together fast. Thanks for the tip!

I had my auto insurance since I started driving (from my parents), my renters and then homeowners policies with State Farm. My original agent had passed and I had moved so it ended up being serviced by a local agent in my new town. Got a promotion with a company car and ended up selling my car and cancelling my auto policy. The office would call me every 3 months to tell me they could save me money if I put my auto with my homeowners policy and I would explain to them that I did not own a car, please put a note in my file. They never did. Every three months I would get a call and they would be surprised when I told them that I didn't own a car.

Then I had a hail damage claim on my house. They would only cover two sides of the house as supposedly the remaining two sides did not have enough damage to meet the criteria. I had the roof fixed but put the siding portion in bank - had kids in college and didn't have extra cash for siding. Fast forward several years and we have another major hail storm. Now the adjuster tells me that the previous "undamaged" side has old damage that should have been covered but the time limitation has expired. I said FU after 45 years with them when the agent wouldn't return my phone call...

You are correct. No longevity discounts with most companies anymore. Loss free follows you normally wherever you go.

Unfortunately most companies use "independent" adjusters, which many of which are not your friend. There is only a couple of companies who use their own, which oddly enough is a benefit to policyholders. If you have a claim I always suggest a second opinion.

True story for any "high end" boat...meaning a vessel over 35 feet and/or high value, over 100K of value. Most mono line or specialty companies are better for dialing in coverage.

Do not really care if you believe me or not. Do not post personal data on open forums...

Good luck...

MM

I don't disbelieve you. I'm always open to other's opinions or facts.

It was eons ago, so its all water under the dam.

Any personal data is long gone.

But if you want me to tell you the name of the MF insurance agent, I'll be happy to comply......LOL. (just half kidding).

Just as an update to my original posts. Bill climed to 3.3k and still having some problems. Made the call to the ins company. Will see what happens.

My daughter sold insurance for Liberty Mutual for about 3 years and left about 2 years ago to go to another company. She won numerous awards while at LM and had new agents calling her from 1/2 way across the country because their managers told them to call her for advice for newbies...lol.

Anyway, I call her with my insurance questions. Stuff gives me a headache...lol
