2012 470DA INSURANCE RATES?????

I have a 2003 460 DA with Cummins 6CTA's. I have Travelers and I pay about $2,600 annually. Last year I was 80 miles from my home port (Newport, RI) and had a valve seat drop while in Nantucket. Bad news! Lost half the season. The good news is that the $47,000 repair job was covered by Travelers less a 1% deductible and 20% depreciation on the new parts. Travelers was fast, efficient and gave me fantastic customer service. There is an addendum on the last page of my policy that deletes mechanical breakdown as an exclusion. Make sure you have that!

And Florida is honked up big time on marine insurance lately. I was looking to step up to a big Vicem or Nordhavn and my broker put the brakes on it due to insurance issues in Florida. Really stupid stuff like a requirement to maintain a full time third party captain. For my 52DB with agreed value, unlimited use, and Bahamas riders slipped on the East coast of Florida is a tick under $6K. I expect that to go up significantly at renewal.

I went with BoatUS and got a much better deal...
I realize it’s a sample size of one, and only anecdotal, but I will be seeking another carrier when my current situation is resolved.

And this is a claim where it’s my policy being used only due to exceeding limits of the “at-fault” party’s policy. In other words, we are we are not supposed to be adversaries. And it’s agreed value.

It has been and continues to be “less than what you would expect from your boat insurer” experience, in nearly every regard.
