40 sedan bridge forum

I spent time today tracing the hose and it is the overflow for the sump box. Weird thing is the water level in the sump is well below this hose but there is a continuous trickle of water flowing from it into the bilge. All I can think is there may be a partial obstruction or low point in the hose that is keeping it from completely draining. Will bring a compressor this weekend to try and blow out.

Thank you for this! I have always wondered what that hose was connected to.

Hi everyone,

I finally pulled the trigger on a 2001 400DB with 3126 diesels.I will be keeping her in Burnham Harbor in Chicago, once all this virus goes away. I am a licensed Capt and plan on using the boat for both pleasure and taking people out to see this great city! I will tell you that I have read all 228 pages of threads and comments and have learned more about my boat that I would have picked up anywhere else. Thanks to all who take the time to post!

I am looking to add a few things and wanted to get the groups feedback in my level of importance I will list each project/idea below:

  • JL Stereo (8.8 speakers in the cockpit, on the fly bridge pointed to the swimmers, in the fly bridge, 10 inch sub in the fly bridge, 2 sets of 6.5 in the salon and bed - I would really like to also have speakers on the bow - What is the best way to do that?) A remote at the helm and next to the sliding doors so I don’t have to go in the boat to change the music)
  • SeaDek (is 4K a good price for swim platform, cockpit, stairs and fly bridge?)
  • Tint all the windows (I am thinking limo tint?)
  • Upgrade all the electronics (I am thinking Garmin MFD -GPSMap 8612xsv, VHF 115 Marine Radio, GPS 19x NEMA 2000 antenna, GMR 18 xHD, (What do I need to do to connect to the existing autopilot?) Can you think of anything else I need to upgrade all the electronics?
  • Cockpit fridge to replace the ice maker
  • Fuel flow sensors? (Not sure how many I need or what kind to buy. Do any of you have these? How hard was it to install?)
  • Oil question -
How many quarts/gallons do I need per engine? I plan on using Rotella T1 30 Straight Grade conventional Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil (Does anyone have any better options?)

  • Transmission Oil question-
SAEO SAE 30 Weight (Is this also what you guys use?)

Filter 324-2598 Cat Filter

  • I was told to fill the steering oil fluid - Can I use any ATF to fill this?
I appreciate all the feedback!

Capt Hoek

Congrats Johnny Utah
I just added a pair of JL8.8 on my bridge with a 10 inch JL IB sub. I’m driving it with a 1000w 5 channel JL amp.
I chose a fusion Apollo head unit and am using their NMEA2000 fusion controls at the helm. plan a NMEA 2000 install for your next MFD. Being able to see clearly your music selection and have control of the music is better than fumbling for a phone to mute it. You can do this with the Fusion Apollo and I will use that but it’s not as convenient underway.
I also have the sea deck and love it. That price seems close to normal but mine was done prior.
Also look at what many have done replacing the freezer. I LOVE the amount of storage I gained by ripping it out. Take a small cooler of drinks into the bridge.
I’m also interested in tony and the fuel flow sensors but I have a Cummins. Enjoy and congrats again.

Thank you for the quick reply! I am really looking forward to going out on the lake. Do you have any pictures of the 8.8’s? I am trying to decide between the JL and Fusion head unit. I plan on running most of it on the MFD when underway. That SeaDeck looks great! You really value that extra space under the stairs that much?

I had the JL media master before. The fusion could power all my indoor speakers right from the head unit. The JL needed RCA connections.
I don’t have finish installed pics of the 8.8’s because I just put them in. They are amazing. Scooper just also did it. My freezer hadn’t work for the first summer so I pulled it out and was going to install a fridge. Once the freezer was out there was no way I was going to install a fridge. I laid down padded home gym squares to keep it clean. C66EEA31-4A6F-4553-AF42-D7AD7EFDFFE3.jpegD0CCC9D9-C5F5-4E8A-BCC5-3CE2010D1E69.jpeg

I have a 2000 400DB up at Northpoint. My 3116’s take 7.5 gallons per side The 3126 should be similar.

Congratulations on your new boat! I just did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Same boat. Cant wait to use it this season. Fingers crossed.

There is an O-ring between the housing and the glass bowl and an O-ring on the threaded cap, not sure which your looking for. I can tell you that my sea strainer for the A/C is a Groco ARG 750. You should be able to find all the replacement parts with an internet search.

So unlike everyone else’s, my AC strainer is apparently NOT a Groco ARG 750. I know because I sent them pics of the basket and the strainer itself. Can anyone identify this? Is it a Perko? Anyone else have a non Groco strainer? Oddly, my engine strainers ARE Groco, ARG 2000’s. Go figure. Any thoughts? Here are the images:

Looks like Perko. There is a part number stamped on the housing. The strainer baskets can be found at West Marine.

Take it out, take apart and clean it up, get the gaskets, reassemble. Not difficult

Yep, I'll agree with the others, looks like a Perko. Forget what I said in the post you quoted me on. I had Perkos in my 360DA. Can see one here:

Sorry if I misled you. Yours is the first Perko I've seen in a 400DB built after 2001. Never say never on these boats I guess. What ever they have in their inventory when they are building them must be what goes in these things.
Below is what a Groco Strainer looks like. If your other strainers look like this, they are grocos.
IMG_2654.JPG

The Perkos are very common and as others have said, parts are readily available. Good luck.
Edit: forgot to answer your original question. The groove in the cap on the perkos on my other boats did not have an o-ring. They had gaskets that were of a cork like material

Thanks all! I was thinking Perko so that’s a good place to start. I’m being a good quarantininer and not roaming the aisles at West Marine, although that does seem like the best course of action. I’ve been roaming the virtual aisles of Amazon and that hasn’t been productive. No idea why my boat got the Perko o stead of the Groco, but like someone said, it’s probably what they had handy. I don’t care. I just want to know what it is so I can service it!

Yes, I do want a few extra parts to refresh the seals on these and the others. I have a nice drip from the port engine strainer, too. And yep, I’m positive that’s a Groco. That’s what the label says! Lol.

Thanks again to all. I’ll let you know how I make out at WM

Once you get the part number off of the casting, you can order all of the parts.

Now is a good time to remove it, disassemble, clean and reassemble it.

Welcome and congratulations!
I’ve been quoted $6500 for SeaDek installation, so your price seems great!

Johnny Utah:

The factory Raymarine autopilot receives its data over its NMEA0183 inputs. Your new MFD will need to output that if you want to have the autopilot follow a route. Otherwise the autopilot can still be used to hold a due heading, which is all I use mine for.

You may find it challenging to find someone willing to tint the inside of the front curved glass. Let us know how that goes.

Couple of your questions answered:

Tint. I had a pro home installer do 3M to the level of Limo. for window's and door. 5 years strong and looks fantastic. See my avitar.

Garmin back talks to the Ray Marine. I think around the last 10 pages I even show the image to attach the wiring. super easy to connect and have them talk. When mounting use the FP marine bevel to match up and they will cut it to the 8612 I have a 7612 in there and added a backup cam. Not needed, but I do like it.

Cockpit fridge- ehh, I put a big ol super cooler IE YETI RTIC PELICAN (I use a RTIC) by the door and it adds an additional seat. Then I mounted a 12" JL in a custom box in the place were the fridge would go and still have room for a ton of stuff. Gives great lows on the lower level but not abnoxious. A fridge then I looked it up a couple years ago was over 1.2K so I figured to keep like 16 beers cold for my crew that will last 15 Min was not worth the ROI and I might as well just have a cooler. Plus when I leave on Sunday with ice in the cooler and some left over beers, on Friday it still has cold beer with ice. (I am on a mooring so no constant power)

Stereo- For swimmers I have seen people cut right into the back storage door and add 7.7 or 8.8" speakers for the swimmers, but I hate cutting fiberglass. It doesn't grow back. Plus you would want to make them a sealed box and glass in the backside.

Had mine tinted last year, and it is one of my favorite upgrades. I think it really updates the boat well too. Considered speakers facing back, but as stated....It doesn't grow back, and it's too much weight on the door for something that has to be opened every time that you go out to unplug shore power. There does not seem to be an option to mount them anywhere else where they would be symmetrical, and that would drive me crazy. My plan for rear speakers, which I doubt I'll do, was to have (2) aluminum round bars (1 1/4" I think) about 18" long with wake tower speakers mounted to them, and slid into the rod holders on each side with quick disconnects like a battery tender has. I would put the connections in the battery shut off locker to port, and fuel switch locker to starboard. Between the speakers on the flybridge and cockpit that I upgraded with, it's plenty loud and clear for us.

Got any pics of this? I took out the ice maker, fully intending to replace with a fridge. Then I saw how much space was in there. So I thought about putting a sub somewhere there. How did you mount it? Is it just in the cabinet now? That may work, as my door isn’t solid. I would love to see what you did!

Couple of window tint install pics. I used a guy that was experienced with cars for 20 years and retired to our lake. He did an amazing job. In the 2nd pic, you can see before and after. Find someone with experience that really knows what they're doing. Not the 24 year old from the local car stereo shop that "says" that he can do it. I talked to several of them, and paid that price on my last boat. Even if you have to pay them to travel a bit. It's a tough job with huge windows, tough access, irregular rubber weatherstripping to trim around, and compound curves.

I put a cheap 12" kicker sub in a box in mine after I pulled the ice maker out, mostly because I had the extra amp space left over. My main subs are (2) 10's on the flybridge. It just sits in there shoved to the back (port side) and allows tons of space in front of it for storage of dock lines, float saddles, etc.
