Petition to open Marinas

Except for my mental health, do I need to go to the boat? In the grand scheme of things, no. But for the sake of everything impacted by our boat ownership - i certainly hope our marina opens soon!!!
I'm with you on the mental health stimulation. I got a 3 hour dose of that about 3 weeks ago.

The problem, as I see it, is if I take my boat for a spin the Joe Dumbutt sitting on the shore slobbering over his boat thinks "If he can do it, so can I". Then he hooks up the boat, stops at the gas station to fill up and grab a 12 pack and heads to the ramp.

So how many people did he just come in contact with, and therein lies the problem and the justification for prohibiting boating by closing the ramps.

I read a response from a state legislator outlining his thoughts on easing restrictions selectively. He made a good argument. The state can continue road construction, but a building team can't build a house or landscapers can't trim your shrubs. Menards is selling plants but your local nursery has to eat their inventory. Big box stores are open to hundreds of customers while local shops that might see a few customers at a time remain closed. I guess I'm kind of on the fence. I can see the value of a total lockdown to let the virus come and go, but even as restrictive as it is here in Michigan, it's far from a total lockdown so the spread continues anyway. Outdoor occupations and private firms with little or no public interaction should probably be allowed to operate...especially in rural communities. I doubt there is a correct answer.

Frankly, we need it to spread to build up herd immunity. However, we don't want it to spread uncontrollably. Open up, with precautions: Masks, gloves, hand sanatizer, wipes, etc.; Stay 6 feet from people; Stay home if sick; Elderly and at risk should be on hard quarantine.

Here in Indiana they closed all the liquor stores but you can go to the big grocery store chains and buy it. I think it would be safer going to your local liquor store with one or two employees then a crowded grocery store..
I think government looks at it like close everything rather than debate it all... I was in a gas station today and you can buy lottery tickets... So there were people parking buying a lottery ticket not buying gas and leaving... Now how nonessential is that ?

Oh, and add in the officials are also self-inflated and egotistical - like the Mayor of Chicago and her all-important hairdo.
You can say that again. They are addicted to the camera and just love being able to say how concerned they are about each and every citizen. Their JOB is to lead the government to protect the well being of the society. Public health is a huge part of it but what good are healthy people going to be with the economy in flames! I hate to point out the obvious but most of those who succumb to this disease are the old and frail or people with underlying comorbidities that would likely be killed by a bad flu. I saw a sobering statistic about the actual effectiveness of the ventilators. Only a small percentage of people who are intubated actually survive. We are spending a King's ransom building and shipping these things around and people think that if we only can get more we can save all of these poor people. NO WE CAN'T! What we do get to guaranty is having these hospitals billing untold billions of dollars to the federal government on mostly ineffective therapy.
It would be very difficult to hear a doctor say that we wont do everything humanly possible to save a loved one but if it is unlikely to work, its just prolonging the inevitable and further exposing health providers to the virus. Trying to save every human life feels like the right thing to do but its just not feasible.
This is just a terrible thing similar to any natural catastrophe and some are going to perish. It is sad but that is the reality. We have to look at the big picture and figure out the truth of how this thing got started in the first place and put real measures in place to mitigate future similar events.
Vent over. Where is my O2 bottle?

Amazing how a little bottom paint and hull wax can keep the group size to a minimum! I should suggest that to our governor! That will flatten the curve in no time!!

:D:D:DGood point, Everyone is allowed to help bottom paint, wax, and don't forget go to the gas dock. You talk about keeping their hands in their pockets. Even if they pulled them out their arms wouldn't be long enough to reach anything.:D:D:D

Not that the weather is at all inviting at this point, but the state of Michigan has banned the operation of motorboats through April. The guys that have been chasing spring salmon and walleye are a bit upset.

No motorboats. However, if you have a sailboat then that’s ok.

This is the kind of shit we’re dealing with

I would imagine this was aimed at eliminating the crowds of fishermen at the ramps from Port Huron to Monroe. Guys were stopping to buy minnows, snacks, etc. as well as meeting friends at the ramp until the DNR began policing the ramps. I doubt the sail boaters are very active at this point. I had snow on my lawn this morning and the bird bath was an ice rink. Three weeks isn't going to break the bank if it results in a May through October season. Unfortunately, that's a big "IF" but probably the best shot there is considering the rising numbers in SE Michigan. I feel for the outstate residents that are getting the same restrictions but if the conditions were to worsen in the rural areas, they are not equipped to handle large numbers of patients. It's not a good story any way you write it.

I get what you're saying but for me it's the principal of it

No bigger than the crowds at walmart today?

It's the principal of the thing as well for me. I can get my car serviced, or buy parts for my car to work on it myself, but I can't access my boat to work on it, or have it worked on by the marina? Because of this, and the limiting of what a Lowes or Menards can sell, I've sent a letter to my Senator and Governor. Not expecting it to make a difference, but at least they know my thoughts...
And you're right, the weather right now is not the best for boating. I'm not (wasn't) scheduled to go in until next week anyway. I can't work on my boat though, or get it ready...

I'm confident we'll all look back someday and chuckle around the marina campfire - "you guys remember that year the Governor banned motorboating? Man, those were scary times" :):)

I don't think chuckling about an incompetent governor is going to happen around my camp fire any time soon...but I like your optimism :)
