Tips and tricks

Chlorine is added to the water supply to kill bacteria. With the filtered system the chlorine is removed causing bacteria to grow in the boat water lines. When the boat is left the water supply is shut off. The filtered water will grow bacteria and mold in the water lines since the chlorine is filtered out. And the lines are left with no flow and subjected to warm temperatures where bacteria can grow. Also if a fresh water holding tank is filled with filtered water imagine what could grow there.
Perhaps. 2 more disclosures. My toilet uses more water than my drinking, and we use the boat A LOT. I have NSA filters on the galley sink, the cockpit sink, the cockpit ice maker, and the transom shower. So, double whammy to the growth. Never had a smell or bad taste to anything coming out of my tank. For the last 3 boats at least. Peal products, if you're that old. Peggy knew her stuff.

My boat and several others on our dock use the RV filters and filter the dock water into our FW tanks. I fill the tank full in November ahead of freezing weather for when the dock water is cut off. Rarely do we ever cycle through the whole tank and I just always add to it as needed. Never had any kind of issue. We use the water in the summer when away from the dock for coffee, showers, teeth brushing, for everything....never an issue.

"if you're that old. Peggy knew her stuff." What is this statement about. It is difficult to believe that something as to this effect would be written by a fellow boater that has the same seamanship interest as do the rest of us. I said if the boat is left with the water setting not being used for lets say 2 weeks in hot weather there could be a problem with bacteria in the water lines and water holding tank. There was a a article in a boating magazine about water filters : "I can not recall when the article was written". Also someone stated earlier in this blog one was looking to bleach out their fresh tank to be sure it is clean.
This web site is worth the reading to explain what I was writing about. https://theboatgalley.com/water-filters/

Keep a hand hold with suction cup ends on the boat to work your way around cleaning the water line.

You sir are a f-ing genius.

On the hook Saturday and Sunday so I decided to try out my new gadget. Made my way around the boat in a close to 2mph current cleaning the hull of stains. I wear board shorts most of the time so I hook my spray bottle into the key holder/scrapper bungee in the pocket and move around cleaning with a loofa sponge.
Best purchase I’ve made in years.
Thank you.

Which is why, there is not a one size fits all. I'm still alive, but maybe mixing the tank water with Tito's is keeping me that way. Time will tell.......go for a ride.

West Marine sells the same unit I am sure a bit more pricy.

I shop judiciously at west marine. If the price at two stores is similar and I can get the points then I purchase my item there. Where I live in Florida we have so many local boat shops with experienced people that unless you know EXACTLY what you need the minimum wage kid at my local west marine is useless.

Wet wipes or any type of moistened packaged wipes. Turn them upside down. That way all the wipes will be wet not just the bottom ones. When hanging shirts on a hanger to dry or just to store turn them inside out. No hanger marks sticking up on the shoulders.

Use lithium batteries in your remote controls you keep on the boat. They don't leak and damage your remote like regular batteries do. Cost a bit more but last longer and well worth it.

Just put the nozzle in the bilge area and pull back on the handle. Then point it over board and expel. Bonus points if you blast a duck.

I cut the narrow end off of a small plastic funnel and glued it onto the end of the water gun. The narrow tip gets right to the lowest point of the bilge and allows me to get even more water out.

it works really great for the storage locker in the floor of my 240 Sundeck which for some reason has a drain that’s 1-2” higher than the floor. Never could figure that one out

Use paper towel cardboard tubes on the end of sweeper hose tube can be formed to get into tight crevices. Washing a boat there is hot water on the boats with hot water tanks that can be used in the bucket so the soap will work better. Also fill bucket with water first then add soap no soap suds.

I have posted this else where. Sliding doors sticking wax them with a wax candle. Or zipper ease wax, it is more expensive but seems to do a better job. The wax can be used on any sliding drawers or tracks. Example ; Plexiglas sliding tracks.

Use a white string mop to clean your deck in the morning when there is dew on it. If you have a shore tie rope put it on a garden hose real. Use Rubbermaid bins to store things in your engine room. Buy a one burner butane stove because one day your generator on your all eclectic boat will not work.
