hello
Im not sure I want to take on this project myself but how much does it cost to get the drives painted , they need it , i bought the boat 4 years ago and they were painted then but now looking pretty bad ,thanks

Sparky90731,

Sand if needed. Trilux 33 in spray or brush. Spray goes on very easy. Less than $100.00 dollars.

A few years ago, I sanded the oxidation off, roughed up the good areas with a scotch rite pad, applied 4 coats of zinc chromate primer and then 5-6 coats of Mer Phantom Black and she looked like new for a long time.

so sand it and wire brush and only use trilux 33 (says to add thinner) and thats it ... Sounds easy enough

Is this slipped or lift kept? If you keep it in the water you can paint them with metal compatible ablative paint. I do our alphas with hydrocoat eco and it works great.

Prep is the key - sand all the loose paint corroding areas down to bare aluminum, then prime with zinc chromate primer. Follow with 2-3 coats of the finish coat - assuming you want the original gloss black finish. Like mentioned don't use a metal brush or steel wool! The Mercruiser Phantom Black is the color, but Rustoleum gloss black is a very close match. I painted my drive 5yrs ago using Rustoleum and it still looks great (I don't stay in the water). Also, if you are looking to replace the decals, you can find all kinds of duplicate decals on Ebay - they are much cheaper than the OEM decal sets and almost a perfect match. If you are looking for an antifouling finish, I would forget the decals.

I'm in dry storage so my boat stays in water 1 to 2 weeks at a time so maybe I dont need anti fouling paint just primer and black paint

Great thanks for the info . Where do you recommend getting the primer and paint ? Like overtons.com ?

Yeah, lots of places sell it, google Mercury Phantom Black. My first online goto place is wholesalemarine.com - they are a CSR sponsor and usually have a good selection and prices.

I believe that Wholesale Marine is where I bought the primer and Merc Black.

I think it might be best to see a few pictures of the drives, first. When you say "they were painted" that could mean Phantom Black or it could mean Anti-Fouled - and based on your subsequent posts, it isn't clear.

For example, if they're currently anti-fouled, it's quite a big project to go back to shiny paint. Also, your "pretty bad" may or may not actually be "bad". Pictures can help us help you.

Ok I should of taken pics before I went back in the water and don’t know it it was anti foul paint or not , looks like a yellow primer that was under the black paint, now my dry storage is shutting down tomorrow with no access to your boat so might leave in the water until they reopen in 4 weeks

Dennis makes a good point, I was assuming they have the OEM paint. Restoring anti fouling paint back to glossy black would be a much bigger job.

Do you guys recommend finishing the Phantom paint with a coat or two of the Mercury Clear Coat?

When I bought it they had painted the drives black

Don’t use the Mercury Clear.
It looks ok at first but after it’s in the water for a bit it goes a cloudy ,milky white.
I tried it and that’s what happened to me. I googled it afterwards and sure enough others were having the same results
