Engines
Twin mercruiser MAG 350 MPI w/ Bravo III
So, I had extensive work done on my boat last year. They removed and reinstalled both Merc Mag 350 MPI engines. For some reason they unplugged (seemingly) all the sensor wires on the stbd engine and (seemingly and properly) removed and reattached the wire harness on the port. The reason I think this is because the port engine is reporting as running normal while the stbd engine has had 3 (to date) issues of bad alarms I have resolved by reconnecting or connecting wires onto nodes they were improperly connected to.

Anyway, I still have phony alarms going off - how the hell do I fix this? BTW, the yard has all but told me to pound sand

if someone from my area sends me a DM I will but I dont want to do that publically. An entire company shouldnt take the hit for one guy.

any thoughts on my issue?

Need more info other than "phony alarms" That 555 ecm that you have can be read.

sure,
at first there was an issue where two wires were miss-placed and the RPM's wouldnt run past 3500. I paid a seperate mechanic to fix that with a diagnostic comp
then there was a knock sensor alarm going off - another guy found the wire that went to that and connected it
Immediately after we fixed the knock sensor a "sys fault - fuel sensor" came on and is on
its relentless

I dont want to do that publically. An entire company shouldnt take the hit for one guy.
Each employee is the entire company.... You need to take your complaint or issue to the President/Manager of the company and explain your situation.

It's 100% unacceptable to have to hire another mechanic to fix another mechanics mistakes.

1) put the offending shop on notice. Documented communication
2) ask if they want another try at fixing the issue. Documented communication to show good faith.
3) tell them you are going to seek another professional opinion for repair and if their work was found at fault a portion of the labor charges from the previous repair should be refunded. Document a resolution if they are not stepping up

If I was the 2nd mechanic trying to figure out the 1st ones incompetencies I would probably charge you 2x the labor rate.

I’m sort of perplexed by this post. Misconnected engine sensors usually show up in the first moments of startup. More importantly today’s engines are far too sophisticated to continue to run with disconnected sensors. The engines were worked on last year, so why now? I’m not questioning the motive of the OP, just trying to understand the nature of the problem. More info is needed I think.

sure.. first - no I have not cleared the code.

second, this went on for months last fall. I was told by the yard that I would have some "nuissance alarm" that was no big deal and I could fix on my own. Foolishly, I bought that. I did go back and have them pay one of the bills I expensed. The issue is this, the codes keep coming. Every time I fix one another pops up. I put the issue away from my mind when I winterized the boat but now I have to deal with this fule sensor issue.
Anyway, its clear to me that the yard screwed up and has done everything they could to tell me to go away.

anyway, to the issue, I was going to try and map the wires from the good engine and then try to inspect the engine with troubles. Its so hard to crawl around in this space though.

but to be totally clear. the engine runs fine - other than the first issue where it wouldnt go past 3500 rpms. its the alarms that are terribly annoying.

I would unplug the ecm, replug, then clear the codes. See what happens. I'm thinking that engine doesn't have a fuel sensor. Maybe the ecm is programmable for fuel level with twin tanks ? Did you get into your smartcraft settings for that ?

ah ok scoflaw. i will look into and do that. i dont have the settings for that yet. not sure where to find my SC settings.. assume the manual?

yes single beep.
also, when I disconnect / reconnect the ecm does the engine need to be running?

Battery off, engine off. Single beep is something simple.

Clear it and it might not come back. Get into the SC programming, you probably can fix it there.

ok thanks. but if it is ANOTHER miswiring issue theres no good way to identify it right.
would be nice to have the senor wires plugged properly

Your motor runs good so it's not a miswire issue. All the key sensors have a unique plug that won't interchange with the wrong one.
