4.3 Mercruisers
New to this group and new to owning a cruiser. Moving from a 25-ft Tri-toon. The Sea Ray Sundancer 280 is very immacualte and well-kept. It has twin 4.3 Mercruiser engines with Alpha outdrives, single props. Does anyone think that this will be an easy transition with respect to operating and maneuvering? Also, the beam is 9.5 ft. Is that wide enough for stability?

You’ll be fine. Just take it slow and find some time to practice.

Also keep up the maintenance on the Alpha's and they should give you good service. Those are good motors and you should find the boat to be stable.

Bill,

I have the same boat, year, and engine/drive package.

I am finishing my bucket list of to-do’s I planned when I bought it last year.

There is a long and thorough 280 DA thread on this forum that makes some good reading. I don’t know how to insert it as a link. I am sure someone else can do for us.

I have been in choppy Gulf of Mexico (2 footers) with no stability issues. Boat performed great. No significant rolling, rocking, or pitching.

If you have any other questions ask away.

Great boat. I have an 05 with 5.0's and B-3s. A very comfortable boat for us on the Great Lakes. The only two things we don't care for (dislike is too harsh) is the single helm seat vs. double and the size of the fuel tank.

The handling will take a bit of getting use to from a tri toon, but that would be the case for any boat. However, the twins will make the maneuvering a lot easier than a single.

Definitely access the 280 forum on this site. Over 300 pages of very useful info on issues and upgrades.
