My QSM11 engines are being tore down for the scheduled cooler maintenance. While the turbochargers are off, the hot side of the exhaust are going out to have the hardcoat insulation replaced and also the aluminum heat shielding over the turbine section of the turbocharger replaced (see first photo). The aluminum insulation is not in bad shape but the fabric part of it needs to be replaced.
But, rather than replacing the aluminum insulation has anyone used the Seaboard Marine blanket style insulation (second photo)? It's less than half the cost of the aluminum.

My QSCs have them. They are in perfect condition after 400 hrs. I had one off but for the life of me a can’t get one of the straps snapped in place. I need to move a snap 1/2 inch down the strap. I doesn’t look like material that would shrink but I don’t know what happened.

Diesel noob question: Have never seen this on on of the 450 CTA's. Whats the benefit?

They fit on the QSC's? On their website they only show them for the QSM's....

The exhaust spinning the turbine generates a lot of heat. The QSM11 has a dry exhaust manifold so only exhaust gas exits it into the turbo. The blanket protects the nearby engine parts and the air intake side of the turbo, from potentially destructive temperatures. Our 6CTAs (I have them as well) have a wet exhaust manifold, which is a coolant jacket around the exhaust that goes into the turbine side of the turbo and out the bottom of it (back into the engine) keeping it cool. We also have a wet exhaust elbow that cools the gases down as they exit the turbo. So we don't need the blankets.
