how do i find OEM distributor, cap and wires requirements. Do i just call my local dealer or does one of the independent parts houses have OEM products at a discount?

IIRC I purchased a tune-up kit from Amazon for the caps and wires. Mercruiser 5.0 Tune Up kit. You will probably need your engine serial number for verification which of course should be on the cowling.

I buy most of my parts from one of the following online places:
WholesaleMarine.com - They are a SROC Sponsor
Marineengineparts.com
boats.net
NuWaveMarine.com

You can look up parts specific to your engine (by serial #) here:
https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/parts-and-accessories/parts-catalog
Then use the part # to search for the best price if you want.

Or the outfits listed above are very good at helping if you call. Keep in mind there are OEM/Mercury parts and also several aftermarket parts supplies for marine engines - Sierra being the biggest. Nothing wrong with most of the aftermarket parts and they will save you some $$, but if you want OEM be sure to specify that.

Case in point...

Yeah, some things you can definitely get from the autoparts store - spark plugs for example, the OEM plug in my engine is AC, so it comes from NAPA, same with oil filters, belts.

thanks again everyone. I always get a lot of good information from these posts.

That's for sure right there. I busted a serpentine belt on a Saturday afternoon so off to the one marine parts store that had one belt in stock at $110. For shits and giggles after picking up the belt I swung by a O'Reilly Auto Parts to see if they had anything close to what I needed. They matched me up to one of their branded belts for $23.

I promptly returned the OEM marine belt and they just chuckled when I said I found an alternative belt for $23.

So glad you returned it. I'd ask if they at least took you to dinner or gave you a hug, $110 belt should have a lb of coke with it.

At the strong urging of my friend, who happens to be very successful Mercury/Mercruiser certified mechanic, I went back with NGK Iridium IX spark plugs in my boat from ORielly Auto Parts. It’s what he uses in all his customer’s boats. Nothing marine specific about them. Some parts can cross over, but not the ones needing spark arresting screens or rust proofing/powder coating.
There was a standard auto part oil pressure sending unit on the boat I just purchased. It was almost rusted out completely. Replaced it with a marine unit that was powder coated.
