The "virus" What are your thoughts

@El Capitan, I think you've stated your position on many threads. Respectfully, consider the context and motive of the article. At this point it's simply confirmation bias... They simply don't want the supply hoarded by those in little danger while supplies run out for those in a hot zone.

I hope we can put this to rest. I would challenge any doctor not to wear a mask (n95 or better) when treating a PUI. Esp. these doctors they quote about effectiveness of masks.

You can keep making posts about the ineffectiveness, and I will keep trying to keep people safe by telling them that masks are an important part of PPE. Not only will they help in keeping the pathogen away from the orifices, but it will keep there hands from contact as well.

Personally, I feel it's unethical and and goes against their oath to make such statements. I think it's important to stress that a mask (depending on specs) isn't a guarantee that the pathogen will not get through via poor seal or the filter itself. But, there is clear science that blocking the airflow is beneficial and keeping hands away from these areas is important to protection.

Anyway, avoidance is best (good luck- seriously); proper hygiene and washing and PPE is next... If you can get yourself a positive air respirator and full body hazmat suit, then great. If not, N95 isn't a terrible option....

BTW - All this is precautionary. I wouldn't go around wasting resources today...Save them for when needed.

Someone - random person - I was talking to in the hotel bar. He was recommending a N100 mask from 3M for air travel????

comments, advice? I have a 3-4 hour flight on Sunday.
Effective or not, my wife takes Clorox type wet wipes and wipes down everything where we sit on the plane. The buckles, tray table, arm rests, ect.......
We just got back last weekend from a week in Puerto Vallarta, and so far all is good.

Boat guy, Oh puleeze w your sanctimonious superiority complex.

Haha...Nice...Name calling...Why? Reveal your true self...Next, apparently, you're telling me what to do... like you have a say....

If you're going to call me out you should get to know me better, as you're just making yourself look bad. Perhaps you want to apologize, let's see...

I don't have a superiority complex. I have a desire to help people. And your continual posting that masks aren't effective will garner a response. I'm sure your wife doesn't wear a mask if/when she's treating infected patients, right?

I have a computer tech background and also, unusually, a clinical, public and environmental health background. One of my businesses cleans hospitals (I don't mean a business that I work for, I mean a business I own). We were also called into USAMARID after the Ebola issue. So when someone post that they just got back from a conference in DC, listened to the head of HHS, states we're all doomed, masks don't work, and ends with good luck, I feel compelled to interject.

If you want to continue down this negative path, the choice is yours. I'm Buddhist and I think it's important to be united in providing good guidance and calling out when something might be harmful. I welcome anyone's support, including your own, of guidance when it comes to proper safety measures over economic impact... I know you just flew into DC for a few days from Chicago (Chicago, right?) but, I've lived the inner-beltway politics and understand first hand how DHHS / CDC operate from decades in that area. If you don't understand that their talking points are balanced between outcomes / economics / panic, then you don't know DC at all....Me, personally, I don't care about the economic component, nor the panic...I simply want people to be able to protect themselves...The other stuff will have to work itself out... With me or against me, your choice, your path...

@wyrman - Your wife is smart...Always a good idea to wipe things down. The airline doesn't do it.

As a 30 yr. retired airline employee, you can't wipe stuff down enough, IOW, keep doing it, the aluminum tube carries more germs than a friggin hospital.....Trust me on this......

I believe this is the real reason for the guidance...But, I think for Govt's to plead to citizens not to protect themselves because they didn't do their respective jobs and stock up for this inevitable scenario, prior to need, is unacceptable. Before you think I'm faulting this administration, I'm not...They inherited this behavior. I think this administration is far ahead at moving quicker than I believe earlier administrations would have. I'm happy the CDC has pushed the test kits out to the states. You don't prepare for a pandemic during a pandemic....Let's hope it stays relatively contained in China. Their totalitarian approach is likely what is keeping this moderately contained. I'm opposed to the oppression and gov't control, but it helps in situations like this.

The beauty of life is, we all have our paths... Thanks for your concern about the length of my posts, but I'm good with what I write. I write what I think is helpful to people, and I have/make the time to do so.... I'm very fortunate that I spend basically all my time near the ocean or on the water somewhere...(I'm looking out on the ocean now as I type this)...Further, I'm very fortunate to have control over all my time. I answer to no one...I only know that none of us are guaranteed tomorrow...So I appreciate each day...I don't take it for granted. Nor, my friends, some of which are close and others simply friends by association. I consider many of the people on the forum friends by association. Some have been helpful to me over the years, and I hope I've helped them as well. These are the people that I make the effort for and these are the people I'm "talking to".... You can be one if you like.

So, you don't need to concern yourself with me....Look within... Again, I give you the opportunity to take the high road and you are consistent with your rude behavior. Even when others point it out, you disregard them...When are you going to learn? Seriously? You are in your sixties, correct? When are you going to look in the mirror and do better? Your reactions and behavior are textbook psychology. I could write a long post about it, but I'll refrain....Someone recently told me my posts are wordy...haha....I have no desire to call you out...So, once again your choice...Let's try again...

El Capitan is a dick. Don’t give him the attention he is seeking. He has a 50 year old boat and a 30 year old car. I bet neither run. Maybe that’s why he is so grouchy.

@JimT - I appreciate your words...I don't care about his boat, nor car....I am concerned about how he treats people. But, I don't want to derail this thread any further, and I hope this is the end of it. If his words are the only negative thing we face from this thread, I'm happy to be the brunt of it...

It's anyone's guess how this epidemic will progress. Today, I'm hoping we are on the top of the bell curve. Even if we do escape the crisis here in the US, let's not discount the impact and death that is the reality in China. The international community, China, and the US administrations are doing a decent job of taking the measures required to curb this...My hope is the individual citizens will also do their part. It will only take a few callous individuals to change things for the worse...The efforts each of us do not to get infected and be a vector, matters. Further, putting others before yourself is you are a carrier, and taking quarantine steps, matters....

The Epoch times doesn't seem to be a reputable news source.

Google it.... there are quite a few similar stories I've found...but alas it's China. What true and whats not?

@firecadet613 - It's likely true...I imagine they are trying to distort the numbers officially by not confirming the cases. If you look at the reported data, they are specific to "confirmed" cases....My belief is they will manipulate the data as best they can to create the best narrative. While, personally, I want the best data, I'll let that take a back seat to doing everything to contain the outbreak. So, even if corners are cut to deceive, I hope the effort is on containment....

There will be plenty of time to point fingers and correct the record later. Now we just need to hope that China doesn't get overrun.

@yobub - Curious, do you believe the official numbers from China? I don't know and can't speak to the credibility of Epoch Times, but I would say the numbers and issues at the crematoriums rings true.

I didnt say that I believe the reports out of China. My point in my comment (that I didnt make clearly) is that we are all better off if we stick with reputable news sources. That particular source, which I hadn't heard of before, does not seem to be credible.
