The "virus" What are your thoughts

It’s a well known secret in the public health community this thing is spiraling and the Chinese are under reporting both because of their national security as well as lack of infrastructure in rural areas.

We (healthcare industry) know this is a global pandemic and will continue to expand exponentially.

Not saying this is the end, but it can easily be the tipping point for global disruption and urban violence in industrialized countries starting in EU.

Make your changes.
Act as if it was in your neighborhood.
It’s in my local hospital system in suburbs of Chicago.

Are you saying that your hospital system has unreported cases of the virus, or just that the two known cases in the Chicago area (husband and wife) are in your hospital system, which has been publicly reported as St. Alexius?

What do you mean, yes?

What are you saying yes to? There are more cases than reported?

There are, according to the CDC, 82 cases of suspected Corona. The problem is the samples need to be flown to CDC to get tested and verified. Hopefully testing will become avail. in other locations for faster diagnosis.

I agree that China is probably under-reported for a multitude of reasons. First, they likely tried to suppress it..And, now they are likely over-run and couldn't give an accurate count if they wanted to. There is a difference between the "confirmed" cases and the "suspected" ....No one has the number of suspected...The number went up around 3.5k just today, so I have no idea how they are testing. If I was to guess, I would say the number is likely 3x or more in China and I have a feeling they will hide deaths too...

Now, on the plus side, I'm hoping the awareness around the world will make the medical community more prepared and people more vigilant in general....My concern is they will get over-run...Further, perhaps @El Capitan wants to chime in, but I've found some hospitals really don't have the PPE for their clinicians and I'm not sure what the scenario will be like if they do.

It would be great if the decision makers would limit air travel and the more people are fearful, the more likely they will self quarantine.

17,400 confirmed corona virus cases. 361 deaths.

Yes, every government is under reporting.

Every year between 300k-650k people die from seasonal flu.

For 2019 hospitalizations due to flu increased 30%.

Flu season peaked in March in 2019. So it will get worse before it gets better.

Influenza is the most feared pandemic of concern globally by all nations.

Between October 1, 2019 and January 25, 2020 there have been 10,000-25,000 seasonal flu deaths.

The alarm bells are ringing full blast re corona. The silence is deafening.

Not many masks in Detroit or Atlanta Sunday night. But, we are getting notifications from our suppliers to stock up since masks are running off the shelf and suppliers can't keep up (I'm a dentist)

Real funny Spike...…. I think Il wait til this thing settles down before I get my pacemaker/defib installed, Kalitta Air is flying over another 2 747's of people coming back from China as we speak, NOT too funny a subject if you ask me.....but then again, from you, I'm not to surprised...….

Try finding any N95 masks from the regular Haunts ,sold out on Amazon, eBay ,CVS ,Walgreens, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, The few that are available you will pay through the nose for otherwise you’ll have to hit up medical supply ,Grainger etc.

This is why the CDC made the recommendation regarding masks. They will likely be in low supply. My company orders by the case (~250) and I made sure we were ahead of this so it wouldn't impact our ability to work...That said, the last 2 cases ordered are back ordered. We'll see when they get filled...Personally I feel avoidance is a far better approach than trying to wear PPE... Truth is while it might help, most people don't know the proper procedure for donning and removal.

Droplet transmission can be introduced in several ways. Direct inhalation, you touch an infected door handle and then use that hand to wipe your eyes, nose, mouth, etc. This virus transmits similar to the common cold. If it is on an item that you touch and is still "live" and you introduce it to your body via eyes etc by rubbing or touching any non protected mucosial part of your body, it offers the virus a route in.
Best protection is prevention. After being in any public place, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap for at least 30 seconds and rise well. Use as hot of water as you can tolerate. Keep some hand sanitizer available and use it when washing hands is not available. Examples: after pumping gas, going in and out of stores, handling money/receiving change (which is the primary reason I use credit/debit cards for 99% of my in store transactions). Money is one of the most dirtiest and common forms of transmission. Police your children to make sure they are doing the same. You just don't know where people have been or been in touch with. A dollar bill can be transferred between multiple people in the course of a day. These practices should become routine to aide in keeping any transmittable decease from infecting you and your loved ones, not just the Corona virus.

If masks where effective then almost nobody in China would be infected.

I went through TSA yesterday in Chicago and Boston and none of them were wearing masks. I asked them about it they said they were all given the option but were told wearing gloves was far more effective. All of them were wearing gloves. Even those walking and standing around.

Buy gloves.

@El Capitan, respectfully, wearing gloves without face protection isn't smart either. The advantages of masks are two-fold. First, they will stop a certain amount of the pathogen. But, equally as important is it stops people from putting their hands near their mouth or nose because they can't reach them. The virus doesn't infect you through your hands, it's simply using your hands to facilitate getting to your membranes. Glasses, masks, etc. help safeguard against this. If people wear gloves, they've simply become an extension of their hand.

If people were diligent about keeping their hands off their face, there would be a lot less spread.

TSA agents always wear gloves.

I travel weekly. That has not been my experience. Only at certain stations.
Virus is carried to eyes, nose, and mouth via finger tip membranes and hands.

Not really interested in debating this. Do as you see fit. I will do the same. Good luck.
