The "virus" What are your thoughts

I can only speak sort of generically, and not specifically to this strain. Viruses do not have to be inhaled, but do have to enter into the body. I don't think that's through skin contact, but could be through mucus membrane...eyes, mouth, nose...poss. a cut....

@El Capitan makes ref. to if you are in contact, you got it...But, I'm not sure specifically what he means, nor if he has specific info regarding this strain. If what he said was true, I would think the cases would be even higher now and they would be shutting more things down.

A quick question about the mask. I've read that the virus is transmitted through droplets. Do these droplets infect others if they land on the skin of another, or do they have to be inhaled?
Per the CDC, it looks like it has to be contracted through a membrane. This article doesn't say that directly, but it is implied. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/transmission.html

A separate article I read from Harvard Health says the droplets dissipate in the air after 3-6 feet, so you have to be in pretty close contact with someone who is infected. https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/the-new-coronavirus-what-we-do-and-dont-know-2020012518747

Thanks. That info doesn't really clarify why, if it's spread through airborne droplets that are inhaled, why don't the masks help?

@Gofirstclass , If you read my posts, I've stated that masks do help. Mask will in no way guarantee your safety and I would not recommend them if you are front line first responder. That said, while HHS is great at interpreting data and stating efficacy numbers, I've never seen them as the Macgyvers of the world...They like to set policy...But, through policy out the window when you're in battle in a foxhole.

The reason the clinicians and administrators discount the masks cavalierly is the masks are too porous the filtration isn't small enough to stop viruses...But, the viruses, while airborne typically are attached to other molecules, so that can increase the size. Further, just because they are small enough to go through the mask doesn't mean they will...In other words, even the cheapest filters collect some dust even if a lot of dust goes through.

I've seen people laughing at people that are wearing water bottles with the bottoms cut out on their heads. But, I commend them for ingenuity, as it might just be what keeps them safe and helps stops the spread...Remember, if you take personal precautions, you are also helping the community by not becoming a vector.

The heat maps we have in the US is what China looked like at the start...Now, we are well ahead of this, which is great. But, that's no guarantee of anything...

Just learned this year’s vaccine for seasonal flu is only effective 20% of the time.

My wife works in admissions at a hospital and said 8 out of 10 patients test positive for flu virus.

They’re handing out Tamiflu like candy but it only works if taken within days of initial onset. So ineffective for Corona.

We have 1 Billion colds each year in the US. This means recidivism is high. Flus come on faster and harder. I have a head cold right now. My luck.

Corona is a global pandemic. Not officially designated yet but spreading across EU and ME and Africa.

We have 5 states w it.

Take care.

The flu is a funny issue....The Gov't promotes the flu shot for everyone and then is surprised when the strain that they didn't vaccinate for becomes an epidemic....What did they think was going to happen? It would be common sense that the strain not in the vaccine would become the transmittable strain. And, clearly, as you see how prevalent the flu is, you can see how stupid we are as a society of personal protection and staying away from people when we are sick...It just shows how selfish we are...The only difference I can see now that is a bit more concerning regarding this strain of Corona virus is that the onset of symptoms could be up to 14 days and it's claimed the virus is shedding before symptoms. If true, the "systems" we have today are ill equipped to stop the spread....

My advice is to tell everyone to self-quarantine as much as possible and limit activities to non-discretionary.

At least this administration is being very proactive and ahead of this. I'm surprised the Dems haven't complained that he should be impeached for tightening the border.

When the border issue became a talking point and the Dems were stomping their feet, I tried to bring up the importance of strong borders and containing entry to those who do so legally, for this very reason...I guarantee that some of the health issues we've had in places all over this country were due to the callous disregard for the community safety when the Obama admin. was flooding rural areas with immigrants that were not properly screened.

We only have 8 cases now in the US. And, those cases are quarantined. If we do a vigilant job of screening at the borders, we could contain it. But it's going to require screening everyone no matter where they come in from....Esp. SE Asia...Other countries without the infrastructure will likely become overwhelmed.

Do everyone a favor, as well as yourself, and don't become a vector...

Noticibly more masks at ORD tonight, saw probably 25 in the terminal.

Interestingly, all but 4 of these were on caucasian women.

I've been a lucky one, I'm never affected by colds or the flu...until last year and this year. I'm not sure if it's me that's changed or what but I question whether I could handle anything worse than last year. This coronavirus thing is making me nervous. I'm not coming out of the woods until it's over.:D

Two cases were just announced in my county. Suddenly it's real.

edit: They are actually in my town. Next thing I expect to hear is whether they are my neighbors.

“As of 5 p.m. Monday, the official tally of coronavirus damage runs at more than 17,000 confirmed infections, more than 21,000 under observation, 361 dead. But the actual numbers must be far higher, possibly by a considerable magnitude, according to estimations by doctors in China and infectious-disease experts around the world.”

Official tally....from China mind you.

This virus collapses your respiratory system. Similar to pneumonia but stronger.

@bobeast San Benito, CA? Did they say where they think they got it from? Were they in China and have they been out in the general public?

Yes, San Benito. Apparently the husband just came back from Wuhan and passed through airport screening. Went home and promptly gave it to his wife and both started showing symptoms. The story goes, they have not been out in public since his return from the airport.

Has anyone seen a credible report of a US based transmission through casual or incidental contact?

I have only seen reports of a primary case exposed through to travel to China, and then transferred in the US to a very close family member. Our case in Chicago is like the case in CA - one spouse travelled to Wuhan, infected the other spouse who was a caregiver.

That is the only pattern I've heard about, but they've been very tight-lipped about it. Curious what the incubation period is. All of these people are getting screened at the airport which clearly is not catching it. As I understand it, only the CDC lab is currently equipped to confirm the diagnosis, and I'm sure they have a backlog.

It will be interesting, and hopefully not too dreadful to watch, to see which countries are prepared to handle coronavirus, and which are not.

Update: The two individuals in San Benito county have been transported to a Hospital in another county due to worsening symptoms and the need for immediate care.

For those that wish to read further, this is the most up to date info avail being disseminated by the CDC. Lots of links and info to drill down on.... What is a little concerning is there are 82 cases pending results and 36 States with people under investigation...Unfortunately, at this point all testing is at the CDC so there will be delays due to transportation of the samples.
