I have an older e120 Raymarine display and I'm looking to upgrade. Is there a compatible way of upgrading just the unit to a newer one instead of upgrading the radar and all other components. Maybe a new unit with some wire conversion harnesses?

My issue was my older gear was analog and all the new stuff is digital... google this >> Raymarine analog vs digital

Good advice, another good source is the Raymarine customer support forum. The moderators have their own little rules about posting; so read the rules.

There is a possibility your radar is upgradeable. I have a set of E120Ws andHD open array that will work with the newer Axioms.

Raymarine has very good compatibility information on their website. They have it broken down into which arrays work with which MFDs.

When I'm back at my laptop I'll see if I can find the link

Edit: Here's the link to the Raymarine support forum listing arrays that are compatible with the E120.

I think you might be looking for the opposite, so please post which array you have.

You and I have the same year and model boat so unless someone upgraded the radar it is not compatible with any current generation Raymarine MFD.

The cost stinks, but the difference in imaging between the old and the current Magnum is amazing and worth every penny in our new england spring fog.

I went with two Axiom Pro XL's. The footprint is smaller than the E120's so you either need to make a filler or you can order a replacement that is precut for the Axioms from Technographics, they are the OEM for the original panels.

You can reuse your transducer, there is an adapter cable available.

If doing it DIY I would suggest you contact BOE Marine, hosts of this site for a quote and tech help - they helped me on my 44DA as well as my previous boat.

I went with RM a127 with wi-fi radar which was a huge mistake... It ended being return under warranty and I pleaded with them to send out the wired unit which they did and it has been rock solid since... I added an ER camera too.

OK, silly question (and sorry to hijack): How do I know what radar I have? PO upgraded to e120 hybrid touch MFD's (I think) so would radar array be upgraded too? MIke

On ours it says “HD radar” on the array. If you have the RM manual it would say as well.

The e120 isn't terribly old as far as electronics go; I am pretty sure that required the HD radar, and I'm also pretty sure those radars will work with the new Axiom displays.

Correct at least on one. HD radar works with Axioms. The E120Ws were installed on our boat in 2011. 9 years is a lot in dog years, even more in electronics years.

We just completed this project on our 2008 58. There is not much of the old E120 system that was compatible with the Axiom Pro 12 RVX MFD's. We ended up only using our Ducer, Autopilot drive system, engine room & aft cameras and the AIS I installed several years ago. Even the GPS antenna's and autopilot were not compatible.

2 Axiom Pro 12 RVX MFD's
HS5 network switch
4kW Magnum Radar 4'
RS150 GPS
EV-200 power pilot (our drive system was compatible)
New acrylic
Plus various cables and connectors for the new network

You don't say what Radar or other components you have, but I replaced a 4' open array Pathfinder system from 2001 with a 12' Axiom and a Quantum 2 radar last year. With a single Raynet device (radar) a HS5 is not required. Adding another display, external GPS or autopilot will require a HS5.

My system:
1 Axiom 12
1 Quantum 2 Radar with 10m cable

The B60 transducer was compatible with an adapter cable (Part #A80489). Most of these transducers are compatible.

My autopilot system (ST7001+, Type 100 Course Computer, Flux Gate Compass and drive unit) works just fine, and will follow a track or course, but has limited control options to/from the Axiom display...must be done from the ST7001+ control head. Its all connected through a Sea Talk to SeaTalkNG converter (E22158).

My original ST60 Tri Data also works just fine. The transducers are wired directly to the ST60 and data is shared over the SeaTalk-SeaTalkNG converter, hence data available on the Axiom as well.

I'm thinking you should be able to go with the new Axiom and with the adapter and converter listed above have about everything you need.

There will be a model number and serial number on a tag on the radar base. On mine it is inside to base, so you have to open it up - not a big deal if you have access to the boat and can get up near the radar arch. You might also find the model number and serial number in your manuals if the previous owner was diligent about record keeping.
