84-87 390 sedan sportfish owners check in!!

Hi Marty,

Thanks for checking in. Speaking of which I am guilty of not having done since middle of summer. Would love to see some interior pics. Will probably have some q's to ask afterward.

I'll post photos soon. I will be taking her out this weekend. Any special requests for photos of particular areas?

Marty

She all original inside? Any upgrades? How about your electrical panel?

Thanks

I have a 1986 sedan sportfish, (fresh water boat w/ 595 original hours). 340 mercs that got 10 gph at 9.6 knots this summer on a two week cruise to cape breaton n.s., canada

Well i was wondering about cruise speep on these 390 sport fishers ,1986 with marine power 410hp 502cu inch mpi engines.I know there are probably none around like that ,except the one i know about. The 78 yr old that owns it has only been putting 10-20 hrs a year on it and hasnt even thought about gph or wot speed or cruise speed ,i think he just putts arpund a bit and cleans things ALL THE TIME!

Looking for someone that can share pictures showing onboard charger wiring and mounting on a 390 sport fish. I purchased the boat as a repo with all electronics missing.

I have a 390 express I think the hull is similar. the charger is in the cabin as soon as you walk in on lower left side adjacent to stairs. If you pull stairs out you can see wiring to it. the ac should be also adjacent to it.

Here is the best I can provide you with right now. My charger is accessed through the small hatch ahead of the engine hatches. This is my old charger but the wires matched up perfectly with the new charger I installed this spring.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hey Nick,

Thanks for the info. I am heading to the boat on Fri and I will take some pics to show mine.

Rebuilding my Old 86 390 Sport Fish... cat 3208ta. looking for some guidance. At 2500 rpm I am getting 17 knots. (WOT)2600 19 knots... This seems slow to me, looking for feedback from others what speeds they get. Additionally over 2400rpm stb motor runs hot 200+ and sets the over temp alarm off, drop rpm cools right off... and will run all day at 2300rpm at 185 degrees. If you would share some speeds you all are seeing it would be appreciated. Also any thoughts on my overheat condition.

Thanks

an older thread but I believe i have narrowed my search to the ideal boat after a year of tours and considerations. the 390 sedan seems to be the winner although i get all worked up about a lot of other candidates .
so now to zero in on finding a fresh water Sportfish for Lk Superior

Hi Mn! I have a 1986 390 Sedan Bridge. Awesome boat. We have had her two years and is out first big boat. We cruise Green Bay, Wisconsin's Door County and Lower Michigan. Here are a couple of pics:

A great friend of mine grew up in Door County . This will be our first big water boat as well , I always bite off a whole hunk at a time when we try new things , we run a 320 acre farm and have built a large family .
I may have a strong lead on a 390 sf near Chicago, I wonder if shipping her vs running her home to Duluth is wiser ??
Schick what’s your opinion

Overland for sure, though not as fun. That would be an awesome trip but lots of gas. LOTS of gas. We get about 0.9 gallons per mile at 21mph. That is per engine so 1.8 per mile. 400 gallons gets consumed quickly. Not sure on the local rates, but we are considering moving up to an aft cabin for the extra room. Shipping from NJ or MD ranges from $4.5 to $5.5 a mile overland. There is a Great Lake thread on this site with some knowledgeable people who would know a lot more about shippers in the area. If you have a home marina in mind, that would be a great place to start asking.

Thank you for such a knowledgeable response.
Marina , I am in discussion with the closer one as it seems a good fit although it has some pros and cons .
Your pics make me wish for summer !

Make sure you have a marine survey done prior to purchase. Windshields on these boats are notorious for leaking and, though small, can cause some headwaches under galley by rotting out the water tank. Otherwise, they are pretty solid. I was glad to help and we are looking forward to spring as well!
