Gun Rights

This will make Monday interesting....

President Trump on Friday declared the Second Amendment is “under very serious attack” in Virginia amid a contentious gun debate in the commonwealth and ahead of a controversial gun-rights rally in Richmond on Monday.

“Your 2nd Amendment is under very serious attack in the Great Commonwealth of Virginia,” the president tweeted.

VERY well done! Thank you Boat Guy

Very well prepared and spoken!

Trump, keep out of this! You won't need to tell us how to vote or who did what to whom

I would politely disagree. There are many people out there from every state in the union who need someone to lead them by the nose to the polls and suggest who they might vote for.

Good luck tomorrow. From all appearances it's going to be a HUGE and nasty crowd.

I think our governor and his friends have gone off the deep end of the pool.

FAA...no drones, or any other flights over the Capital
No Weapons of any type..including scissors
No verbal threats to him or his staff

All this started on Friday and continues till Tuesday.

Does he really think the anger he has caused will only last till Tuesday?

Just what is a universal background check?

I was talking to a co-worker the other day that lives in Oregon close to Portland. She isn't up on guns or gun laws but isn't opposed to guns and aid she was thinking about getting one. She made a comment to me about how me being an east coaster might not agree with her but that she thinks all states should be required to do background checks to buy a handgun??? Unless I am wrong here aren't they required in all states (aside from the private owner loopholes). But her misunderstanding is caused by MSM and their twisted facts so people that aren't gun owners are misinformed because of media

Boatman, I went and looked "universal background checks" up. The jest of it for VA. As it stands now, if I go to a gunshop and buy a handgun they do a background check. If I sell you one of my handguns, we don't have to do the check.
The law will require ALL sales will have the check done. Opponents say that will lead to a data base of gun owners and privately issues. Remember a couple of years back newspapers wanted to print lists of CWP holders and the Dems let them.

I hope that answers your question

I wanted to say this one more time,

Whatever happens here tomorrow and I pray nothing does, but ... I blame our Governor and the Democratics If anyone gets hurt or dies I hope the families get a great attorney and sues the hell out of them.

dwna1a, I think you're in for a helluva noisy day, in more ways than one.

Also those of us lucky enough to live in the wonderful state of WA know all about universal background checks. They're required on EVERY transfer. An example of how silly our wonderful law is, if my son wants to borrow a weapon from me, I have to first submit the information to the state for a background check. I'm glad I gave him all my weapons before this law took effect.

Proud to be a Virginian today. I bought one of these:

Don't want to speak too soon, but so far, so good.

I dont tweet.. So what's in that post?

Everything seemed to go well. I doubt the idiots listened to a single word anyone had to say.

I'm not going to rush to judgement. I felt proud to be a Virginian today and the people that showed up proved that the Constitution stands above political parties. Even the local Antifa group joined in support of the protest and didn't wear masks. If the 2nd Amendment can bring people of such different views together to protest screwing around with the Constitution.....there is hope.

If this causes just a few dem Senators and Delegates to change their mind....the bills will fail to pass. If it doesn't and they remain tone deaf to the people.....we have 23 months to find candidates that will repeal any draconian laws they pass.

This was barely on CNNs radar today. I expect hit pieces in the NYT and Washington Post tomorrow since that is just all they are capable of.

Northam looks like and is...... an Idiot. One of the great things about politics is what happens when you force things to occur and people really, really get mad about it.

As far as I know in PA even private party transactions need to go through a background check? I have never bought a used gun and don't remember ever selling one. Have traded a few into dealers but then a background is done anyway.

But my co-worker was under the impression that even buying from a dealer didn't need to go through a background check in most states. Again, an example of MSM getting inaccurate information out to support their beliefs and causes

I don't tweet either, but you can open the link - I was able to anyway and I don't subscribe.

It was an infiltrator, pretending to be there for gun rights, egging on other demonstrators to go "shoot" someone. No one was buying it and called him out.

I got no horse in this race, being Canadian, but god forbid any violence happens at any of these rallies.

On a side note, did the voters of Virginia vote in the state government on the basis of this platform? If so, then is it not the will of the majority of voters in that state? (Second amendment issues aside). Democracy means that the majority decides things. That can be a really divisive problem though in an increasingly polarized two party system like you have.

That’s a good question. In the USA, the supreme law of the land is the United States Constitution. The Constitution establishes the structure of the government and the powers of the government and the people. Specific individual rights are delineated in the various Amendments to the Constitution. If a jurisdiction (the legislative branch of government) passes a law conflicting with one of the rights guaranteed in the Amendments, then that law can, and hopefully will, be deemed “Unconstitutional” and invalid by the courts, the Judicial branch of government. So if a local or State government passes laws in violation of the Constitution, then those laws cannot stand, regardless of how many people in the local jurisdiction want them enacted. IF those majority of people want to persist in trying to pass their unconstitutional laws, then they must first follow an established procedure to Amend the Constitution (change the Constitution so their proposed law will not conflict with the Constitution) which is a fairly lengthy process which requires ratification by the various States that comprise the United States of America.

Fortunately, it’s not a democracy; it’s a constitutional republic. Designed to be a hedge against mob rule of the type they are trying to effect here.
