I had read were the LCD's on older Ratheon (Raymarine) instruments/autopilots etc could be replaced, I thought I'd try replacing mine on a ST7001+ unit that the LCD was blacking out.

I ordered the part online from here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Replacement-for-ST7000-ST7001-ST8001-Raymarine-Autohelm-Display/283656909733?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649.

It was about $160 delivered and took me about 30 minutes to replace. Since a new Autopilot is about $2k, this should let me kick that can down the road a while! Came with excellent instructions with color pictures. Covered what was needed and what not to do!

Center of LCD discolored and unreadable.

Nice job!!!

Thanks! Anybody that has this era of electronics, that was a pretty easy fix. Contemplating if the Tri Data could use the same treatment, but I think I can get another year or two out of it.

The data code inside was 02/00. I'm assuming that's February 2000. Almost 20 years...maybe I can get another 20.

Now if I can just get the autopilot to track strait:D

Excellent job and write up. As for your tracking concern, start with mechanical rudder control inspection. Next time your on the hard, have someone on the ground wiggle the rudders while you look for any play in any of the moving joints in the ER.

Good job on the fix. If you are in a similar position but can’t find a donor control head there is another possible solution.

In doing research for an electronics upgrade I have been using the Raymarine support forum. I came across a post about replacing the SeaTalk auto helm controllers (st5xxx,st6xxx,st7xxx) with the updated P70r & P70rs control heads. The post is authored by RM customer service and outlines which autopilot computers will support the P70 series control head.

Here is link to post that lists which autopilots can have control head upgraded to P70 series controls:

I think I looked at that a while back...unfortunately, I have a Type 100/300 and its my understanding these are not compatible with the newer control heads. For the most part, I only use the AP to steer a course. As I mentioned, I need to get it to follow a course (better than it does).

My recollection is that it will start deviating from the course and not correct. In reading the RM forum, I think it has to do with a couple of parameters. Now that I can see it, I'll revisit the issue.

I have hydraulic steering. I'll have to look at the steering ram when I'm back in the bilge, see if there is any play. Possibly air in the system???

I am of the thinking this is a problem with my autopilot setup, but I'll check.
