Expanding my Pic / Video horizon

September 2nd, 2012. 38 foot sport fisher, running approx 18 knotts, Mom and 2 small children sitting on bow, Dad on fly bridge, boat on autopilot, no PFDs, glass smooth water. Hit large partially submerged log, 2 children went overboard; one died and the other survived with disfiguring head injury from hitting props. Yes it is a nice video, but things happen. Maybe I am overly cautious - But was the worst preventable accident I have responded to. Guess you had to be there.

I’ve only flown the mavic along side the boat at say 8kts with me on the bow but the wife was at the helm. I also flew along a friends boat with them on the bow and no one at the helm but again only at 8kts I did manage to get some great footage.
I don’t see why you couldn’t fly low in sport mode and keep up with the boat I agree with all others I just wouldn’t have anyone on the bow while doing it.

Happy, I went back and looked at your video again and the still photo at 1:12 in the video shows the boat on plane with the two girls standing on the swim platform. The oldest girl appears to be holding onto the grab rail with two hands but the youngest one appears to be only holding on with one hand.

You commented that the water was calm and, while you're correct in that assessment, all it would take would be one large wake from another boat to cause your boat to bounce on the water. With you looking back aft watching your drone you probably wouldn't see a wake coming. That one moment of inattention could cause a serious accident.

Now, please don't take offense at these comments. They're offered in the hope that they will prevent a serious injury or death. None of us is above being subjected to constructive criticism from time to time. It makes us better boaters if we accept it in the spirit it's given.

Merry Christmas.

Korkie, the whole point of your post can be summed up with the description of that accident as a "preventable accident." Also, I firmly believe there is no such thing as being overly cautious.

...all this BS on a great post and video is why I rather not share mine anymore...

Key Largo tomorrow and will be making personal drone videos all week! LOL

let people live how they chose and mind your own business in 2020

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

As my 'Avatar' states I don't have a clue about boating but my ex-wife's best friend was on board their boat when her husbands best friend fell off the bow at speed and died. They didn't find his body for a week due to the undercurrent.

It's a fact that most boating accidents happen at daytime while being clear and sunny! Doesn't take much...
