Yup, I’ll be installing the vessel view as well. May have to stop by and check out what you did! I’m in RI.

That's great! I'm pretty sure that to have on ipad and chartplotter, you will also need the VesselView mobile device in addition to the gateway.

Here are a couple of photos of the gateway setup.

HI Guys,
I have a 2001 with 7.4's. This summer I added the FOX Marine gateways and I can view my engine data on my Garmin via NMEA 2000. Also, they transmit in bluetooth so you can view even more information on a bluetooth device. There is nothing else that you need to see the bluetooth information, so you don't need the VesselView too. I thought they were reasonable in price and it monitors fuel flow, which was my number one reason for getting them.

I changed my stereo to a fusion and it can be controlled by the Garmin unit at the dash, or on the phone/ipad etc.

Amajamar, I love the upgrades you did and I am in the process of doing the same with my dash and adding another Garmin in the center of the switches.

Chris-380 and I have had some exchanges earlier about the tv's and the icemaker/cockpit fridge debate. I took out the icemaker and went to a cockpit fridge and so glad I did.

Always great to see others ideas and bounce things off of like minded people.
Thanks,
Paul

Paul,
Thank you for commenting on this, I would love to get more info on adding the gateways, maybe what equipment you needed and what kind information you get with them. The info is a little vague out there on the 7.4L

Woo hoo!

I have the Fox Marine gateways in my 340, which has 7.4 MPI’s too, and they work great.

My primary MFD is a simrad Go 12 and I’ve got a Garmen 740 as a secondary backup. I’ve noticed that each MFD not only displays data differently, there are some things the Garmin dose that the Simrad doesn’t. There’s nothing monumental, but figured I’d mention it.

I think depending on the year you need to check with mercury that the engines are compatible with the gateway. I think it’s all after 2004 or 2005, but before that it depends on the S/N

2002 was the transitional year. Some 02’s were 7.4’s and some 8.1’s, which are smart craft compatible. Naturally it’s best to check, but of your motor was built in 03, or later, good chance it’s smart craft ready

So, I should be good with a 2000 7.4 then.

from what I can tell, thu bulk of what I need to buy

kit to do the nmea 2k backbone ($100)
2 fox gateway
2 Garmin fuel flow meters

then tie the backbone into my Garmin 4210, which is capable of showing this

does that sound correct? When I go to the Fox gateway site, I do not see different gateways for different engines, looks like there is 4 of them, but which one, I am not sure

thanks for everyone’s help, I appreciate it

The Fox Engine Gateways are specific to which computer (ECM) you have on the engine, as there were different versions. You can find out by calling Mercruiser or looking up the serial number of the engine on the Fox website. I have a 2001 with 7.4 Horizons.
The data that is transmitted via bluetooth is more in-depth than what I can view on my Garmin, however your results may vary depending on what MFD you are using. By downloading an app you can see it on any device via bluetooth.
You need to have a NMEA 2000 network to see the information on your MFD, and you must have an MFD that can support engine data. You plug the gateway into the harness on the engine and then into your NMEA network.
I know that I get Rpm, Fuel flow rate, Coolant temp, Voltage, engine hours and engine load, but I can't remember what else I can get on the Garmin. There is more information transmitted via bluetooth, but I cannot remember what that is.

It was easy to install and looks very similar to what Amajamar has in his setup. For me the most important is fuel flow rate and RPM to help get best mileage, or "least worst" mileage as these engines sure do suck the fuel no matter what you do.

I don’t think you need to get the fuel flow meters to see your GPH. The two gateways will let you know how much your burning.

You are correct that you will need to set up the NEMA network, and you will need to purchase 2 Fox Marine gateways. You will need to find out if your motors ECU is MEFI 1, 2, 3, or 4 because the gateways are specifically set up for your ECU. Based on the year of your boat, I’m gonna guess it’s MEFI 3. But best to call Merc with your serial number and check with them.

Here is some of data you can see with the gateways (I don’t have a fuel flow meter either). These pictures are from my Simrard, my older garmin backup unit also shows GPH too. One of the things the Garmin does that’s I like is it shows GPH per motor and next to that, it shows total GPS, the Simrad only shows per motor.

Hey Chris,
I was mistaken about being able to find out on the Fox website from the engine serial number which MEFI version ECM you have. However, I unbolted mine from the engine and used the number on the back of the ECM to find the corresponding information on the website which tells you which ECM it is.

I did not need the Garmin Fuel Flow Meters in order to show Fuel Flow.

thank you! I did run across that part of the site.

some people have mentioned calling mercruiser and asking them with the serial number, I have them handy, but I am curious how merc would know which gateway I need to order

Does anyone have the number they called?

thanks again!

Google it and you will find a number for Merc, or you can call Sea Ray at (865) 522-4181, give them you HIN# and they should be able to tell you what MEFI you have, if not they can confirm your engine seri# and you can contact Merc with that... They might even have a phone number for Merc.

Keep in mind, they are not going to be able tell you what gateway to order, but they can tell you what type of MEFI your motors are, and that is all you need to know.

Great information y'all. Really appreciated. Been looking for a lowish-cost solution to get engine data up to my screens, and this looks perfect.

perfect explanation, i didn't know what i was looking for

THANK YOU!

Well, that was as simple as it gets!
called Mercruiser at 920-929-05040

gave my serial number and about 5 mins later told me MEFI-3 controller....

thank you to all of you that contribute to this site, its a great help

That's bizarre, since I just spoke with James at Mercury, and he was not able to differentiate other than telling me that mine is MPI (which I knew).

However, I'd like to assume that with our boats both having the same powertrains, that we'd have the same gateway type. I don't like to assume though.

Thant is weird, i don't recall who i spoke to, or if he gave his name..... i was pretty sure it was MEFI-3 because of another on this forum (PHJAZZ) with the same engines as ours was.....

Just call Merc again... I am sure you will get someone else, and they will be able to provide the info. Also "guessing" you have MEFI 3.
