I was reading up on my generator issue (I have not yet attempted to resolve), I’m getting a CO-3 error, which is “Communication with the CO detector is lost”, on a kohler gas generator, 5ECD. The manual states I should check/clean the connections, and if that doesn’t correct it, then replace the CO module on the generator. Today I read straight from the Kohler repair manual, the board should be replaced every 2 years, part of normal maintenance. Is everyone else aware of this, does anyone do this? I went ahead and ordered a new board, 245$ total from partsfortechs.com, I’m sure that board is probably 8 years old, if not 13 (lots of generator work done by PO), and since I’m getting the error, might as well be safe.

Are your CO detectors all in date and working?
This error isn’t related to cabin-mounted detectors. It’s indicative of a failed CO detector module/board on the generator itself. I assume it’s intended to detect a failing/leaking exhaust system before the resulting CO can accumulate and permeate the cabin area.

To the original question...I have not replaced mine but I have read and pondered the same recommended maintenance interval for the module. Hard to believe it really is a 24-month wear item...

Agreed, seems a bit aggressive.
