Official 380 Thread

You'll find the 380 just as easy to single-hand. I take ours out regularly solo.

Also, when we first started looking at larger boats, after touring a few, we decided there were a few non-negotiables. Separate shower was 1, full-sized fridge was the other. The pocket door/separate forward berth is a big bonus.

Three great things that significantly changed the boating experience for us.

Three great things that significantly changed the boating experience for us.

With us moving up from a 24' 4-Winns cuddy, it was significant to say the least. Hell, when we initially started considering a bigger boat, my wife just wanted not to have to hang her ass over the side to take a leak.

The larger boat will be just as easy to handle solo once you get used to it.
Spring detail is what it is. The bigger the boat, the more work it is to clean, polish and wax the exterior.

very accurate, i went from a single engine 268 four winns to this 380. I take it out by self, no issues. i think you will find, it will be easier than your 340 to handle alone. I know it will be easier to work on the engines..... the drawback is, it's a lot more to clean than a 340. imo

Looking at a 2000 380 AC with the 380hp Mercs (7.4s according to seller). Anyone with some real life speed and fuel burn numbers for this boat. Thanks

I’m very happy with my 340, but I really don’t like the wet head, and my kids are at an age where a proper door/ stateroom would be very nice.

We also do 3 or 4 trips per season that are 4 hours or more, ranging between 80 and 150 miles each way. This has me wanting diesel power. However, I’m dreading the idea of giving up a lot of speed. Could some 380 diesel owners share their cruise speed, gph, and wether your spinning 3 or 4 blades.
I have a 2006 380 with Yanmar Diesels. Very hard to find. I only found 2 other 380 diesels, both in Australia.
Fuel economy is good. This was my first season, but I believe I got a little better than 1 mpg on a long trip. My research says I should burn 14 GPH. I dont know if thats accurate. Next year I want to do a little more cruising, as well as monitor consumption a little more. Next year, I'm also adding larger tabs and changing the props back to stock. Right now, I cruise around 20-22 MPH at 3200-3300 RPM, with WOT at 27-29MPH @3800-3900. Maybe 30 down hill. Yanmars are high revving diesels. My 9kw genset, at a 30% load, is rated at .3 gph. I'm not sure if thats accurate, though.
I hope that helps.
Matt

Thinking of replacing our enclosure and adding a camper top. Looking for advice and experience in what to do and not. Been quoted $7000 (if I take the boat to them) which seems reasonable, but that doesn’t have screens or smiley face zip outs yet

On my last boat (268 four Winns) the eisenglass was in bad shape, so I replaced. Have the same situation but worse with this boat. What is your system for storing without scratching. When I replaced the last boats, I put a sheet down and used a noodle to roll up...

Also, I have seen some that don’t have rear supports on the camper top section that look amazing. Just opens it up....

thanks in advance!
Chris

For the 380 owners left in here, what is your fav mod(s) you have done

Tough for me to narrow it down, since I modernized every bit of my electronics.
I'll say, to keep it simple, my Seablaze Spectrum X underwater lights.

I'll post another thread in Spring about this, but I'm doing some appearance updates now. All side stripes are now gone. Updating all badging and emblems, and replacing all canvas with black.

I am interested in redoing the badging also, would like to modernize it a bit

For me, my favorite was the installation of a new helm switch panel which allowed installing the second chartplotter, Beyond that, the cockpit refrigerator for icemaker swap was great, the installation of Seablaze X2 Spectrums, replacement of Raymarine VHF to Garmin, And adding windhield washer squirters (our 01 did not originally have them) was really great, too!

Replaced the galley and head faucets with single handle ones, which is also a nice improvement. Installed an additional table mount in the cockpit to move the table to the port by about a foot, which really improves access to the starboard side of the seating area! We removed the TV from over the fridge and moved to the other side of the cabin, which made more storage space in the galley.

Also installed Mercruiser NMEA gateway, so have engine info on Garmins, which is nice as well. Upgraded the house battery bank to two Rolls 6V 250 AMP, and installed a battery monitor. Replaced all the cabin bulbs with LEDs, which is saving lots of juice!

My boat does have a camper with no rear vertical bars, which we love, with all eisenglass panels, which initially I thought we would hate, but it's really awesome! In the colder boating season, we are inside and warm, while feeling like we are outside, and we can travel with it closed and have full visibility. The panels have screen panels if we want to install, and each panel can be rolled up and left in place or removed. It works out super and we now love it!

Pics of galley faucet, tv relocation, additional cockpit table mount, and camper bar setup. The camper was done utilizing the original frame from the slant back and adding some bars and the large bow which the panels are suspended from. That's the way it was when we bought it. I don't really have a photo from further back of that, but you'll be able to figure it out.

love your helm! Being on a lake, I don’t see needing a second screen, especially since I have the 7.4 (not 8.1) motors for being able to see what they are doing, if I could ever figure out (in detail) how to do the gateways and set up digital gages, I would do exactly what you have there

thank you for sharing the camper and isinglass pics, that is exactly what I would like to do. I may hit you up for some detailed questions in the spring when I want to take mine to the canvas shop.

a couple questions

Are your screens separate and you put those in instead of isinglass panels?

how do you store your isinglass panels when not in use? My last boat, I would place a sheet over them and roll them up and put in the bag, just curious if there is a better system?

did you replace all 4 of the house batteries with the Rolls 6V, this is a great setup imo, hoping to get another year from these interstates (new February 2019)...

love all your upgradess, very well done. The 12 volts to the cockpit fridge was a great upgrade that no one noticed on my boat but me, I appreciate your help in that one!

Not sure that you can install Mercruiser gateway on 7.4s; I think that the first Mercruisers that have that option was the 8.1s. But there may be other ways to get engine info to chartplotter. If you are using Garmin chartplotter you can install GFS 10 fuel flow sensors and get very accurate fuel mileage data on the Garmin. It's actually more accurate than the Mercruiser data as it is actual fuel consumption rather than algorithmic data. If you are not using Garmin than check with your electronics manufacturer for any fuel flow sensors that they may carry.

The screens do take the place of certain isenglass panels, however we have actually never actually used them. Regarding storage, if we have guests with us for the weekend, each panel can in fact be rolled up and left suspended in place on the bimini frame, so no need to remove. If we are just away ourselves, we usually just lay them gently on the aft stateroom couch. Usually we leave that set up as a bed anyway, so they lay flat. But they can be stored there regardless of the bed/couch status. One thing is that the isenglass is somewhat thicker than the thinnest gauge available, so they roll up fairly cylindrically and hold their shape unless it's really hot out. Your concept of putting them in a storage bag would work as well.

I only replaced the two house batteries with the Rolls, the other batteries are mainly electronics and engine starting batteries, so there is ample power to do that. The banks can be bridged with the emergency start button, so not compelled to upgrade them.

I did run 12V to the cockpit fridge which allows a lot of extra cold storage when on moorings, which is most of the time on the weekends. I also have purchased for this springs installation list a 60AMP charger to replace the 40AMP one we have to speed up the recharge time on the house bank and lower generator run time while away.

If you have any questions, I'd be glad to help as best as I can!

I also have the 01 380, so it’s great to see that all of this is possible. I did buy the gateway and want to install it this year to use vessel view on my ipads, eventually upgrading plotter and everything else.

That's great! I'm pretty sure that to have on ipad and chartplotter, you will also need the VesselView mobile device in addition to the gateway.

Thanks for the other pics, I was gonna ask you for more, because it looks amazing!

If you search "gateway" on this site, you will see 1997-2000 370's (7.4) with it.....

Thank you for info on the fuel meters, I have an old garmin 4010 that has NMEA 2000 input, so I will go that way, for about $400 I can get some great info

So far this year, I am in the middle of changing my cockpit sink and faucet out to stainless, that is gonna be nice! Also changed the windlass foot switch covers to stainless. Changed the rollers for the anchor out, they were horrible.... changed out the slam latch handles on the cockpit cabinets.... ordered replacement speakers for the cockpit (6-mmx650's and a m10ib5 sub from JL Audio). Lastly the script sea ray logo on the dash was gold, just received a new chrome one, and changing the shifter/throttle knobs from gold to chrome....

Still need to get an amplifier and do the camper top....

Can't wait for April!
