Diesel Guys- How much time does it take you or your mechanic to.....

Interesting but not surprising, first this...
I see your points, but sometimes I simply let things play out.

then to this mini rant, talk about something going to shit:rolleyes:....

I don't accept your thoughts. In fact, I'll add, this type of logic is what's going wrong with this country, and I'm doing my best not to be a part of it. This is why our school system is shit; This is why our health care system is shit; this is why many products are inferior to how they were built a generation ago.

Changing oil with Reverso is easy, but never goes as fast as I think it should. +1 to Blue's comments. As far as impellers go, I have that licked.....I bought the impeller tool. http://www.impellertool.com/

I haven't used it on the boat yet, but on bench tests, it is super easy. I'll set a timeer next spring and let you know.

Add to the list changing serpentine belts. Takes about 15 minutes per if you've done it before and the bolts have been freed once before!

Interesting!
How much did you pay for the tool?

Am I crazy or does the website say "call to order" without any pricing listed or the ability to click and buy?? Jay is that price for the retraction tool/puller AND the blue impeller installation/inserter tube?

That was just the price for the Blue installation/inserter......if I recall, the shipping was outrageous. Found it!

Tool: $89.50
Shipping & Handling: $17.50
Payment Processing Fee: $3.40

I splurged and ordered the impeller tool last weekend. It came a couple of days ago and I brought it down to the boat yesterday to give it a try.
Didn’t work out well for me at all.
After lubricating exactly as outlined in their video, I had great difficulty getting the new impeller in to the tool and had to use a pretty good amount of force and pressure to get it in there.
Once it was in the tool I inserted it in the pump only to find that it was impossible to turn the tool by hand and release the impeller as shown in the video because it was so tight.
It was practically frozen in the tool
I retreated and removed the new impeller from the tool on a bench, but it took a great deal of effort to get it out of the tool.
Luckily the Sherwood impellers are threaded and I was able to get it out by threading a bolt in to the impeller and using a hammer on the head of the bolt to push it out of the tool with no damage to the impeller or the tool itself.
Yes, that’s the amount of force that was required to get a well lubricated impeller out of the impeller tool.
My immediate assumption was that the vendor sent me the wrong size impeller tool for my Sherwood 17000K impellers. It seemed like the inside diameter of the tool needed to be a bit larger.
There was certainly enough room inside the pump housing to accommodate a slightly larger diameter impeller tool, so that seemed like a logical assumption.
I emailed the vendor, explained what happened and he confirmed that he sent me the correct size for my impellers. He suggested that I could have used a filter wrench to turn the tool and release the impeller.
While I didn’t try a filter wrench and can’t be certain, based on my experience and gut feeling, the impeller was wedged so tightly in the tool that trying to turn it with a filter wrench would have resulted in something breaking. I’m not sure if it would have been the filter wrench, a damaged impeller, the tool itself, or my knuckles, but something would have given and suffered a catastrophic failure.
Any way you slice it, the tool I got clearly couldn’t perform the task as easily as depicted on the vendor’s video.
I still strongly suspect that the problem is in the sizing rather than design or quality, but the vendor seems to insist that he sent the right size.
I’ve asked for a refund. He said he would give it to me if the tool was still in like new condition.
I’m waiting to get the return shipping info. I’ll send it back to him ASAP and keep my fingers crossed that he’ll make good for it.
I can certainly see where a properly sized impeller tool could make changing an impeller an easier task, it’s a pretty great concept, but considering the price of the tool itself and the relatively high shipping fees I strongly recommend anyone interested in buying one exercise caution in ordering it sight unseen unless they know for a fact after speaking with someone with the exact same pump they have that the tool they are ordering will work for them exactly as depicted in the vendor’s video.
I can verify that if you have a Cat 3126 and use Sherwood 17000K impellers that the size impeller tool the vendor will ship you will not work so don’t waste your time, effort, or money.

Well that is a bummer. I wont know if mine will work for another month when I do the change for the season.

I will let you know.

Without detailing everything, I just received an invoice from a company that did the work 6 months ago. I honestly thought that they were embarrassed to charge me because of some of the mistakes they made that day. But then this weekend I got the invoice. I'm trying to get an idea time.
Did this thread ever get off track... @Boat Guy ...So did you come to an agreement?
