CAT Fuel Filters for 410DA

Say Guys..........excuse me for poking a little fun at you, but what good does it do to store your extra filters "at the house" or "in the garage"? Won't you need them on the boat when you finally do need them?

Same story as David. Bought a few extra to get a bulk discount. I do carry a spare onboard incase of emergency.

I just picked up 4 new ones for install ( 2 needed, 2 spares), what model filters were the ones that blow out? Thanks.

With all the Cat trucks and Cat dealers on the road, they must have found out about this. I guess they rather not come forward and pay for all these defective fuel filters. If these were gas fuel filters, I would think the manufacturer would not have a choice.

Or

Is it possible the installer crushed the top when cranking them on too tight?

Frank - My bow comes down faster when they are not on the boat :)

Mine are 1R-0751 Advanced High Efficiency. These seem to be OK.

I just looked at 2 spares I have at the house. They have more of a small round over at the edge where yours separated. Yours appear to have been rolled over at a square 90 deg angle, creating a stress riser and ultimately a failure point. I would bet those would be considered defective.

You are stretching the material when you form that tight of an angle....making what is already thin material very thin at the corner.. so it’s going to be a weak point.... vibration, internal pressure, bumping it is going to create separation. The pic of the larger radius should be night and day for strength
I sure would be upset about this if it was my boat. I would talk to CAT themselves not necessarily a dealer unless that’s your only avenue. and show them what happened. CAT would not ignore this

I keep a spare set of primary and secondary fuel filters for both motors and the generator on the boat along with a bunch of other odds and ends. Hopefully I’ll never need them.

That would be my call too. Maybe it was a bad batch from their supplier or something. They’ll probably want to know about that.

BTW: Took a quick look at the specs for the WIX filter and it says it’s 6 micron.
I wonder if anyone is using them.

We had our boat for less than 90 days and I noticed the warning light on the helm showing the aft bilge pump kicking on and off. I put the boat in neutral and investigated the ER. The starboard engine mounted CAT fuel filter had blown the rubber seal out and the ER was not a pretty sight. I limped into the marina on the port engine and did not enjoy the cleanup... The mechanic in So. Cal. that did the survey did oil, filters & belts as part of my baseline for maintenance issues. I called him and let him know I was not happy and he said he had never had that happen before.

Ken,

There was one other CSR member that had a filter top separate last year. This appears to be a rare occurrence and I've never had it happen nor have I ever seen it happen on any of the boats near me in Florida.

Maybe you got a Friday filter..........
That was me, the filter was on friend's Cummins Powered Meridian 411 that he just purchased locally and had the engines serviced with new filters. Filter had 4 or 5 hours on it and pretty evenly broadcasted about 10 gallons of red fuel in his engine room. On the bright side he has not had any corrosion issues this past year! The filters were the red after market filters instead of Cummins OEM. I remember at the time there was discussion about the wisdom of saving a few bucks by not using OEM. Just goes to prove anyone can have QC issues. I was in the engine room and had to have the owner start the engine to find the source since there was so much dripping fuel it was impossible to tell even which engine it came from. I got quite the lubing myself in the time it took the owner to shut the damn thing off after I blew out my larynx telling him to shut them down!
Humph, Maybe this is a left coast thing:D

That's defective. I work at a Cat dealer and that's very rare. Id let the dealer you bought it from know, they should make good on it.

Absolutely! The dealer will probably let Cat know about it.
I doubt that Cat actually makes their own filters and they would probably want to know if there is a potential problem with a batch of filters they got from their vendor.

Wow. That’s not good OR reassuring. How long had it been on the engine? In the bottom picture you posted there appears to be some damage visible in the indented ring near the filter top, right below the separation. Was that by chance part of the cause of the failure?
No, that was from breaking it loose.

or

Could installers be cranking them on too tight crushing the top?
Nope! I hand tighten always!

Were the defective filters purchased from Cat? It certainly would not be difficult for our friends in China to build knockoffs.
These were purchased from Holt CAT in Stockton California

This problem must have happened after you ran the boat. Otherwise that engine would have shut down. Good thing the filters are installed somewhat high with respect to the fuel tanks.
