Hello,

First post here! NYC-resident, planning to purchase a SDX270 in the next couple months. It's my first boat purchase. My family has always owned a couple Searays (185 & 390) that I've been using my whole life, so I'm pretty familiar with what I'm signing up for. This has been a goal of mine for a long time and I'm excited to make it happen!

SDX270 seems to be the sweet spot for me. I'd like a boat that's nimble and zippy for wakeboarding / skiing but also has a head and some seating for day trips. I'd like to know a bit more about the last couple generations of the SDX270. Anyone have any insight about what features have been introduced over the last few years? Any year models that are particularly good value and/or plagued with issues? I was thinking inboard but could be convinced on outboard if someone has a compelling argument...

Also, any fellow NYC boat owners, I'd love to know more about your experiences purchasing and owning a boat here. I live in Chelsea and have been dealing with Marine Max at Chelsea Piers and Liberty Landing Marina in NJ. Any pitfalls, horror stories, tip, tricks, advice, etc are welcome!

Thanks,
Justin

The style changed to the current platform in 2015. It is available in an IO and OB. This generation is spacious, performs and rides well, and readily available.
OB is quieter, quicker and more fuel efficient, but impedes on the continuous swim platform. IO looks better, has the rumble sound, and reverses better.
Just need to pick your preference, both are fine.

If I was keeping the boat in salt or brackish water I'd opt for the OB - easier to deal with - flushing, etc.

I purchased new in 2016 a 270SDX. The layout and construction is outstanding. The only issue is changing the water impeller, it is located is a spot that is very hard to get too without removing some engine parts and panels. It cost me $600 for the impeller change due to the hours required just to get to it. The 2018 and above changed the engine access on the rear seat making access much better.

Appreciate the responses! Personal preference is for the IO. I'm inclined to stick with the 6.2L / 300 HP stock engine, but the sales rep was nudging me toward the 6.2L / 350 HP upgrade. $7k for 50 HP seems steep and there's other ways I'd want to spend my budget. Anyone have the 300 HP engine and regret it? Or feel it's underpowered?

The cost difference between 300 and 350hp complete replacement engines is no where near $7k.

also, typically the 5.7 is 300hp.

I'm basing this on the "build my searay" tool: https://buildmy.searay.com/build/SDX270

Section 4: Propulsion shows a $7,154 difference between the 300 & 350 options. If you click the "i" it lists all the specs. It's weird that the specs are literally identical except for HP. Seems wrong that two different engine are exactly the same size & weight so I'm a little suspicious of the whole listing.

The 300 and 350 are identical except for the computer. Both are the new 6.2. And real life price difference will be $4000 once you negotiate.
You want the 350. The 300 is underpowered when you have a load on the boat. Top end for the 300 is 41-42 vs 45-46 for the 350. I drove both plus the OB and picked the OB when I ordered.

I have a 2007 260 and what a perfect family boat for tubing or skiing but also big enough to do some trips in.

Unfortunately there is one bad news. MMax NY service practically doesn't exist. Since they closed Lindenhurst location people waiting for weeks for service. Maybe better option is to deal with NJ locations, Liberty Landing or Brick.

To close the loop here, I ended up getting a 2019 SDX 270 with the 350 HP I/O. Got a great deal on it and can't wait to get her in the water. Thank you all for your suggestions and help.

You will love the space and functionality and the 350 is a great motor choice for that boat. Congratulations.
