I'm in the dreaming/planning stages for an extended cruise that will involve being in Canada for about 3 months. For those PNW boaters who frequently cruise into Canada, what do you do for health insurance while you're in Canada?

My primary coverage is through the VA and secondarily through Medicare. Neither of those cover while I'm in Canada.

Does the Canadian freebie insurance cover a US citizen?

Hey GFC, as a Canadian I've never been a visitor to Canada, but I am 99% sure you are not covered here under any of the Provincial public health care system plans. You wouldn't be denied care at a hospital, but you would be on the hook for the bill...

A quick search with Google.

Do I need travel insurance for Canada?
While Canada has a very good universal health-care system, this is not available for international tourists visiting Canada. Even though it might not be mandatory to have health insurance while traveling in Canada, it is nonetheless very important to buy good short term medical insurance for Canada visitors to insure oneself against being forced to pay for healthcare facilities while on a vacation. In brief, the answer is Yes to the question - Do I need medical insurance to travel to canada ?

Don't know a lot about it, only enough to know what pertains to me, and that is that GFC, you are correct that original Medicare (A&B) doesn't cover me in Canada. But there are some medigap policies that can be purchased that will cover, policy dependent. I will be signing up for a medicare advantage program shortly that will cover me in Canada, but I do not know if that is only because I live so close to the border that my insurance company offers it or if it is available in other parts of the country that are further away. I specifically am choosing the Medicare Advantage plan that I am because it is a large national company that offers in-network options throughout The U.S. because of our travel plans.
I can offer this...when we looped we met several loopers that had to buy travel insurance for the Canadian portion of the trip.
