460 DA Owners Thread

Sounds like an adventure! Excited to hear about your progress along the way. You’ve chosen a wonderful boat. Love to hear when folks like you are taking the plunge and living the dream!

Getting closer to completion...I was able to get the thruster mounted in the bilge this week. Just waiting on the new battery and will get the wiring done after Dec. 9th. All in all, a pretty simple project.

Just a thought but I would install a clear hose on the bleeder valve for your steering cylinder before you need it and bleed oil all over your nice new thruster.

Your always thinking!

Bleeding mine had to one of the most messy job I have done and it still has air in it when turned to starboard.

That is on my service list this winter.

And good tips on geting it done?

Good idea...I am assuming the red cap at the end of the valve is the bleeder? I have never had to do that on any boat so it is a little Greek to me.

How long of a hose to you suppose is safe?

Super looking job. You've actually got me thinking of doing the same. Never thought there was room under the genny. What are the specifics of the unit? Model, voltage, etc? Where are you putting the battery(s)?

Thanks

I went with the Vetus 9512: https://www.wmjmarine.com/sternow9512stern.html

I am placing the battery on the port side aft of the motor on the large platform above the strut access. I will send pics of that area soon. I went with the 12 vdc model thinking it would be easier on a couple different levels, but in the end, it will not. When speaking with the supplier and explaining my install location etc. They pushed me to the 12v model, as did the two companies that bid the install. I ordered the 12v version because it seemed logical to simply connect it to my port side 8D battery and allow the alternator to charge it or the current battery charger. (the existing battery...no need for a new one)

Well, as it turns out, the amperage draw on the 12 volt thruster is in excess of 500 amps when running...the fuse is a 425 amp slow blow fuse. The specifications require 0000 awg wire to be run and the length cannot exceed 37'. I wanted to place the battery shut off switch in the port side cabinet under the sink but the wire run was too far. (exceeded 37')

With that situation arising I had to add a battery (4D) and a separate charger for it, then place the switch in the port side stern locker to reduce the length of wire run. So, all that being said, the wire gauge needed will only be 00 which is much easier to work with and the battery charger will go on the fire wall next to the existing 3 bank charger. We will tap the 120 v AC off of the existing charger and run a single wire to the new battery.

If I could go back and start over, I would order the 24v version which allows for a lot more length of wire run at HALF the amperage. Yes, I would need two 12 vdc batteries in series (24v now) and a new charger still, but the wire runs and battery shut off switch placement would be easier. Not a big deal, just something that I didn't realize when I started the project. As I said, I had 2 quotes for installation and both utilized the same exact 9512 model.

As soon as I get the battery that is on order and the charger installed I will send final pics if you would like to see them.

Oh personally I would just install about 3-4ft of cheap clear hose with a tiny hose clamp. The key to bleeding it is go slow, make sure it’s quiet and have 2 people so you don’t introduce air at the helm. Also... don’t even think of trying it without the fitting that goes in the helm and on your bottle of fluid.

I'm thinking of doing a fluid change on the hydraulic steering because I was going to change out the gaskets due to a very small leak.
Where is the second fitting? Is it under or behind the genny platform and do you leave these drain tubes permanently attached? (I do have the fitting for the helm and the gasket kit ready to go.) Thanks.

Jaws:

tge bleeder valves are under the genset. I hate to tell you this but the rebuilds rarely work. What happens is the shaft is scored and it quickly destroys the new seal and you’re back to square one. Unfortunately sea star doesn’t sell a new shaft so you’re left buying a complete cylinder.

Good evening, I hope everyone is getting ready for a great Thanksgiving. I went to the boat
today, hit the power button for the Bow Thruster on the panel and then turned on the thruster itself, moved it left and right a couple times then the power went out back on the power button on the panel. I am sure there is a breaker or fuse somewhere that I cannot find. Any ideas?

my new Vetus thruster has a small fuse on the solenoid box on the motor. I think it’s a 5 amp fuse....that’s my first thought.

Thank you,
I appreciate your advice on this.
I saw the one valve under the genny and I've located the other one as well; it's a bit more challenging but I will secure tubing to both. The leak that I have is quite minor and I normally replenish it with 1 or 2 cc's of Sea Star hydraulic fluid perhaps twice during the entire season. I think it's just the shaft "O" ring that needs replacing but I might as well change the fluid while I'm at it. I bought the complete gasket kit just in case.

If you have the factory set-up, you will have a 24V system with a Promatic (or other) 24-60 converter. There is a large capacity fuse right beside it at the transom just outboard from the port rudder post. You might check that.

Well I can't let The Wolf get all the "Winter" Credit. We've been busy in Texas too!

So Far, we painted the engines, rebuilt the turbos, replaced all hoses, powercoated the aftercoolers, elbows, and piping. Also replaced wire loom and zipties. Just generally freshened everything up. Still have raw water hoses and Exhause painting as well, but I got side tracked installing a new Furuno Autopilot!

I still have the Genset to do as well as paint the turbos with Ceremic high heat paint and replace the fuel coolers which I also had powercoated.

For reference I used Rust-Oleum Canvas White paint with some Majic hardener added. I handpainted everthing after wire brushing and treating with Ospho.

There are 6 engine room lights which are Lumitec Ibiza and there is such thing as "wire loom tape" which is absolutely amazing and available on Amazon.

The after bilge under the Genset is painted with Interlux Bilge Kote Gray and I plan to expand this once I finish he other detail work back there.

Lastly, I have a local friend who made the decals on the engines so they all look nice and new as well for a final touch.

I posted this in the Cummins forum too but I figure it’s relevant here!

If you see anything out of the ordinary feel free to let me know.

I think I have the same idea, but please explain the fitting on top of the holding tank. Engine room looks great.

It’s a camco tank tornado. When I pump out I hook a hose to the top and it rinses the tank. I actually got the idea from Frank and it really works well. Just keeps the tank clean and rinses the sludge to the bottom to be pumped out.

Hey Josh, that's a great idea. And based on where my blackwater tank is located it could be a great addition.

Alls well:

it’s not allowed on the cruise ship you have now. You have to get the idea from the 580 thread ;)

That is sweet! I just ordered 2 and will install this weekend...I have some ideas for simplifying the hook up into a Y for a single connection point. The water at our pump out station is VERY powerful so I wouldn't see it not being able to run them both at the same time. BUT, I will do a test run first...LOL

Love this site..so many GREAT ideas to incorporate to make life simpler on board.

Wow, I'm embarrassed! I just noticed that my sponsorship status had run out..not sure when it happened but I was using the site for free. LOL (I know we don't have to pay, but it sure is nice to know that it can keep going if we do)

Too many great people and ideas on here that is worth the annual membership.
