Official 19SPX/21SPX/SPX190/SPX210 Thread

Thanks for all the feedback. GatorB8 and JeremyGavin. JG- How do you like the 150hp motor? I currently see two used options. One is newer and lower hours, but with the 150 hp motor. The other is with two years older and has the 200hp motor, but still only 97 hours. I'm slightly worried that loaded up with passengers and gear, the 150hp motor might not cut it. By the way, I love that kicker install. It looks clean!
I really like the 150 on the 19SPX. It is a quiet and smooth engine that is good on gas. That being said I assume you are looking at the 21spx because of the 200hp option. In that case I would go with the 200hp verado.

Been boating for over 50 years now. The 150 is the most awesome motor I ever owned. When I punch it you almost get whiplash. At idle if I didn't hear the telltale squirting I wouldn't know the engine was running. The Black Max prop was upgraded with a same pitch Enertia. That dropped the prop slip to 8%, reduced the mid range fuel usage by 10% and added 3 mph to the top end. Overall the boat is heavier than my previous I/O, has 10 more HP, yet the fuel usage is less.

According to the specs, the 210 is only 300 pounds heavier than the 190. Personally, my feeling is that a 150 would be adequate. Of course, prop selection is the key, and the WOT rpm must be correct for the particular rig.

Also an opinion - I'm not a fan of superchargers. That's where the Verado makes its HP. The 200 block (1.7 L) is smaller than the block on a 75 HP 4-stroke (2.1 L)! Displacement is king. The 150 has a full 3 liter block, without the added equipment to maintain.

Those are good points About the differences before the 2 boats and motors that GypsmJim is making. Something to consider.

Thanks for all the added feedback. Yes, I am looking for a 210 model. This specific Verado option is the six cylinder version with just under 100 hours. By my estimate it was 185lbs more than the 150 motor. In general, at least in cars, I have always preferred the smoothness of a six cylinder to the grittiness of 4 cylinder motors. But I also prefer a naturally aspirated motor to forced induction engines. What I seem to be reading on other forums is that those who have the Verado’s love them and those who have the 150 4S models love them too. I guess that’s means I can’t really go wrong. At the end of the day, I want something simple, versatile, reliable, and tons of fun. The boat with the Verado was the first one I’ve seen listed used in a while. I was surprised at how reasonably priced it is and wasn’t really looking for the 200hp model until this one became available. The boat with the 150hp engine has something like 10 hours on it but looks like it is going to cost $7k more. Part of me has a hard time paying that much more money for a smaller engine, but it is significantly newer. I guess I could see who wants to work the deal more. Either way, I’m flying to inspect and trial one of them and arranging pickup in the spring. I was surprised to see so many pop up for sale now, but I guess boating season is even winding down in the South.

First world problems for sure. Thanks for all the input!

If Im not too late my vote would be the 200 Verado on the 210 and 150 for the 19SPX. And your right about the season winding down. But for us, this when it gets really good! I even had to break out the hoodie today.
I can’t begin to tell you how much fun these boats are. You won’t regret it. Good luck!

I couldn't have agreed more. My preference was always for a V8 up until recent years. My 2 current daily drivers are V6s, but my last car actually WAS an L4 Chevy. Could't have asked for a better engine, and it even was capable of towing any of my smaller boats. Technology has come a long way. OTOH, you can't beat the power of my classic Ponch.

The SPX is a breed of its own. It must be the stringer system or the way the engine is mounted way out back, on what could almost be described as an OB bracket. My son has a 25 footer with a big Mercruiser V8 and a Bravo 3. I can feel more vibration sitting in his cockpit than I can on my 190SPX with the 150 OB. My little kicker is a single cylinder and of course it vibrates quite a bit. But even that does not transfer to those sitting in the boat.

Either way, you're in for a treat.

Just another thought....

If either of your choices have seen salt water usage, I would personally rule them out at the onset. If YOU are planning on salt water usage, then maybe its a moot point.

I think there’s a less than 10% chance we’d be taking this boat in salt water. Unfortunately, every used model I’ve encountered is a salt water boat. I’ve been keeping an eye out for approximately 10 months and haven’t yet found a freshwater boat with the Outboard. I briefly considered trying to make a deal on a new one and getting exactly what I want but it is much more expensive. The fiscally conservative side of me just can’t do it. I recently found a brand new 2018 with the 150hp OB and I was shocked at how close they were holding to sticker, two years later. It was probably good they didn’t budge because deep down, I do think I want the upgraded motor so I don’t tax the engine as much.

Of the used models I’m tracking each one claims to have been dry stored and flushed. I’m assuming a thorough survey will uncover any serious saltwater damage. I have a friend who details boats and he seems to think we can get either of them cleaned up pretty good to start protecting the hull again (he’s done it before). But now you’ve definitely got me re-thinking the salt water exposure won’t be a headache at some point.

I was ready to fly down and look at the boat with the Verado but the dealer hasn’t been able to send me any of the maintenance records. I’m of the mindset that if they maintained it they should be able to show me those records along with the documentation for the remaining 8 year passport premier warranty.

Someone mentioned to try to get the Select package. That seems to also be rare, at least in these used models. I think I’ve seen one, and for some reason that boat didn’t have a cockpit cover. A huge draw to this boat is all of the cockpit seating (combined with all of the storage). Are the standard seats comfortable for all day boating? Or does the Select package make that big of a difference? I really can’t mimic that on a sea trial. I didn’t even think that through. That’s why I signed on to this great forum!

Our is likely our last boat, so we bought almost every option available, including full SeaDek and the Select package. Wherever we go people come up to us and comment how gorgeous the interior is. Yeah it was sticker shock, but then again it was what I wanted.

It has MORE upholstery, but the seat bottoms are likely the same, so I doubt that there is any more comfort. Nevertheless, when we go boating we go ALL day without any discomfort. I would say its the most comfortable boat of its size that I ever owned, but that's just an opinion. Someone else might have a different opinion.

We opted to NOT get a cockpit cover. after owning several over the years I wouldn't have had it if they gave it to me for free. We got the full mooring cover, which is a vacuhold, so its fully trailerable as well. All the snaps used for the smaller canvas just detract from the aesthetics of the deck, plus they make waxing a PITA.

I collect and restore outboard motors and at this point I won't take a salt water motor any more. OBs are better than I/Os, but just try to remove fasteners after lengthy service. But since you're looking at relatively new motors, maybe it won't make much difference.

Quick question for everyone:

Does anyone know if you can convert the port side lounger on the 2018 21 SPX?

Howdy all - thought I'd try to get some dialogue going again here.

Anyone how I would go about getting ahold of this steering wheel? This is on a SPX190 in the Netherlands. It's a lot nicer than the one that came on my 2016 19SPX.

Thanks!

Look closely - the entire dashboard is different. Parts were likely sourced in Europe, closer to the assembly plant.

Aesthetics is largely a personal thing. Uflex and Teleflex (Seastar) both have lines of custom marine wheels. Some are even nicer looking than the one above, though they wouldn't have the Searay logo.

That is an Isotta Prestigio SS, and here it is in white, but perhaps you can source it in black: http://www.isotta.com/dett_prod.php?id=33

Yep, I've noticed that Sea Ray has used many different dashboards on the SPX line through the years and across regions.

Since the ladder stows upwards and horizontal, do you really need a bungee anyway?

Regardless, how do you put the ball on the cord?

Hello everyone,

I have a 2015 Sea Ray SPX 190 OB with an All Sport (fish and ski) package. The boat has three batteries and a factory installed ProMariner ProSport 12 onboard charger. How long should the batteries take to charge (assume they are near dead). So far, I have had the charger plugged in for 24 hours and the charger still shows "conditioning". Seems a bit long to me, but perhaps the batteries are taking longer to charge since there are three of them?

First. Are they wet cell batteries? If so, make sure they are topped off with distilled water. Fill to the lower lip, usually about an inch or so down.
