Official Cummins 6cta 450C thread

I knew someone was going to say that but honestly I just cleaned them too!!!! Check out the last pic and they are clean and red! HAHAHA

Does anyone know where I can find this pipe coming off the turbo? Looks as if the bracket broke at the weld.

You all are going to love this. Today I changed the fuel filters. Racors and spin on. Did the port spin on. No problems as usual. Then went to do the starboard spin on. Well I stupidly took off the coolant filter instead of the fuel filter. Things got real messy before I figured it out. It took longer than you all would to figure it out because I have Peak Fleet Charge coolant in the engines. Its pink, same color as the fuel. Only good news is I am due to replace the coolant on both engines, so the starboard coolant is now replaced. Ha!

Bill,
I'll give a shot on draining remains on PORT engine, as the petcock is easily accessed. If it's not much and not worth the hassle, I may not bother with it on the STBD side.

Do you guys do the entire cleaning procedure (run CR, then flush it with water and refill new collant) using Coolant restore, or do you just drain and refill with new coolant?
As previous post indicated, I changed my coolant. On the port engine I pulled the hose at the coolant filter (the hose connected lowest on the block) and just over 7 gallons came out. Then I opened the petcock on the block to see how much was still left. It was 1.5 quarts (see picture). Coolant at bottom looked nice and clean. I then filled with Just under 7.5 gallons plus another 1/3 of a gallon into the overflow jug. So, looks like capacity is about 8 gallons total, as has been posted several times earlier in this thread.

Did you "flush" the system with water and run the engines a bit?

ZZ13....more questions....
The hose you pulled off at the coolant filter is the one on the right side, #13? And about where is the petcock you mentioned?

As always, thanks in advance.

Good it worked out in your favour, Bill. I've not yet had to change the spin on filters but have read about steps to re-prime and bleed the air … which seems like a major pita! Curious what you did and if there are any tricks to minimize the air and simplify the bleed process?

I turn off fuel flow with the Racor valve. After I remove the old, I pour its fuel into the new filter to pre fill it. Once the new is on, turn Racor valve back on then bleed air using the on engine bleed pump. Starts right up.

I was told to never reuse that fuel as it contains contaminets from around the old filter. I always use fresh fuel and top it off. A little messy, but have never had air issues nor have the need to pump. I wrap oil absorber around the glass and bowl to catch overflow.

I've been thinking about this as well. Wouldn't pouring any sort of unfiltered fuel into the new filter introduce possible contaminants? You're essentially bypassing both filters at this point. For this reason i skipped changing the secondaries this past season as the boat is new to us, but would like to know recommend method going forward.

On your old mechanical Cummins motors (same as mine) the procedure is to prefill the filters with clean filtered fuel, introducing it into the filters from the outside holes. That is the way the fuel passes through the filters, outside to the center then up and out. Anything you pour down the center hole will be sent through the injector pump and the injectors unfiltered.
Modern common rail diesels are a different procedure.

I'm not too worried about a pint of fuel which has already been filtered through the Racor, out of 175 gallons

Just changed the drive belts. It's been six years and 1000 hours and I am a year past due from my arbitrary 5 year cycle on those. Here is one I took off. Looks unworn except for the printing wearing off. Going to just keep this as the spare. Is it true some of you change these annually?

Wasn't me. Sounds like I'm on the same schedule as you. I have a bunch of things on my shopping list for spring install and belts are one of them. I put the current set of belts on in April of '14. They will have 6 years on them when I change them, more hours though, 2000. also going with new tensioners, original with 2400 hours.

Let us know where you find the great deal on tensioner. I should do mine as well. They are original.

I changed my starboard tensioner in 2017. I "assume" that it was original to the boat. Here's what it looked like.....
