Ive been looking for what engine oil I need to use for my engine. I have the Merc cruiser 5.7 EFI in my 2002 DA. The previous owner has some bottles of Quicksilver 25w-40 that he gave me, and I've used it to add a little here and there with the oil leak I've had. Now that it's repaired I want to do an oil change but want to make sure I use the best oil possible. I've searched the engine manual but can't seem to find the recommendation for engine oil. Any help?

Thanks,
Jeff

I use the Quicksilver myself as it is the OEM designated oil. Trying to get a consensus on the "best oil possible", however, is going to feel a lot like trying to figure out which car maker is better - Ford or Chevy. :)

@Stee6043 LOL, yes after i wrote that i kind of had that same thought. But overall, i just want to make sure i'm giving my engine what it needs vs what it doesn't. If the quicksilver 25w-40 is "good" for this engine, that is all i need to know.

In my 5.7 EFI I use BEL RAY high performance SAE 25W-40 marine oil it's similar to Quicksilver oil
and probably the best oil ;-)

Yup - the QS 25/40 is the easiest choice (although other brands can be just fine). It is what is specifically recommended by Mercruiser. QS is the same thing as the "Mercruiser" brand (black bottle). It's just labelling - the "Merc" label is only supposed to be sold at Merc dealers.

Another question I havn't been able to find in the manual or the forums is the amount of oil for this engine. I've heard very vague descriptions of "between 3-5 quarts" depending on factors. So, can anyone assist me on how many quarts of oil i need for this engine?

Between 4 and 5 quarts is what you will likely put back in.

5.5 quarts should be the capacity of your engine

What does the group think about amsoil. My marina and mechanic pushes it every once and awhile. Thoughts for boats? I have a 98 5.0 efi

Mercruiser recomends their quicksilver 25w40 and it’s relatively inexpensive at Walmart. Why would anyone consider anything else. Walmart also carries the quicksilver high performance gear lube recommended for bravo outdrives.
