Downward firing speakers?

How do you like that 4 speaker pod in the center of your arch? Do you get good sound out of it?

It's not mine. I ran across it on boat forum some place when researching. I could only imagine how that set up would sound though.

It just so happens that I am currently installing two downward facing speakers in my arch on my Sundancer 290. I hate the side firing speakers locations on this boat. They are right in passengers ears siting on the side seat. While I am not disconnecting the sides, I am adding two down firing speakers which I think should fill in the sound a lot. It should even reflect a little off the side of the arch and a little off the canvas helping enclose the sound. Ideally I would like to install two custom mid/tweeters in a separate enclosure up on the dash in the corner of the windshield, but it would be all custom fiberglass having to match the contour of the dash. It would be time consuming.

I just cut out 2" holes so far to measure the distance. I used different size dowels on a wire that I can slip up there to measure. What's not obvious is that the top contours in, so its difficult to measure with a tape. Worst case I figured I could always install an additional puck light and no one would know my screw up. The marks are the magnet/voice coil size which requires the depth, blue is the cut out, and outer mark is the installed speaker outer diameter.

I thought I would need a 1/2" spacer ring for depth which I accepted, but now that I cut the 2" hole, I think I might be able to get away with no spacer. Worst case 1/4". Just like when I replaced the side firing speakers in the arch, I will try to sneak in as much dynamat-like material as I can. I actually may epoxy some dowels inside between the top and bottom of the arch to give it rigidity. I think this would help almost more than dynamat.

I had a custom install in my prior boat, The Dynamat in the arch is a must!
