The Head, To Use Or Not To Use, That Is The Question?

Yeah I knew he meant that but wondered why the ****? Thought maybe I missed a memo somewhere else on here to not use Gary’s name or screen name!

I thought the same thing....That's why I posted the name to see what would happen. I know at one time wingless (w****s) was banned

Well...I'm the one that try's not to use it for #2 if possible, and it sounds like a few others need to move to a nicer marina. Regardless, it's not the poop, it's the paper. Nothing is worst when your head fails, so I try to take care of it. Sure, when we're on the hook or out on the water, we use it no problem. A couple primary reasons I try to LIMIT it's use for#2 and primarily a result of past problems in doing so: 1) too much paper will cause the float in the holding tank to jam. When this happens you don't know how much poop you're carrying around and could overflow your tank which gets very stinky. Not good. To much paper also could damage your duckbill valves with are sensitive pieces of rubber. Even with marine paper it sometimes gets stuck and will not seal properly, resulting in vacuflush heads not holding a vacuum. The second and less worrisome concern is that #2 smells. I do not have issues, but have seen where on term usage will "soak" the pipes, causing "order leakage". Any one of these will ruin your day and will always be on the bottom of your marina's repair orders. These are only preventive measures as I plan to keep my boat for a looong time and it will reduce maintenance.
With that said; we ALWAYS shower on the boat and for pee...but not at the same time. :)

I think the key is using some kind of digester with Norflex being the best. I use as directions say, but also open the ball and put about 1/2 scoop into the hose a couple times a month. Undissolved, it will settle out of the water and lay in the hose cleaning them as well. We use only Scott paper for marine and RVs. Never had a problem. Both units will hold vacuum for week(s) at a time.

Can guys can help me figure this one out? How much Antifreeze do you personally use to successfully winterize?
The idea behind 5 gallons of Antifreeze to winterize with noflex is 2 fold.
1st to clear pipes of water, getting the antifreeze where it needs to be system-wide.
2nd Noflex will continue to work on sludge build up over the deep sleep, but needs sufficient liquid in the tank/pipes.

I get information from around the world, and put it in my Noflex Digestor write up included with Amazon purchases. But if there's a better method, please let me know so I can support other users of Noflex with the best information.

What are your best practices, what has worked for you please?
Thanks Kat@boatersmate.com

@Boaters Mate,
I mixed NoFlex into a half gallon of pink non toxic antifreeze last night, in preparation of dumping it in my holding tank later today. Woke up and it's no longer pink - does that sound right?

I’ve never left it sitting overnight so I haven’t experienced the color change. But I do mix some Noflex in with the pink stuff before pouring it in the heads and never had a problem.
Sounds like the Noflex simply attacked the coloring in your pink antifreeze, but despite the change in color the antifreeze will still work as expected.

I started putting Noflex in the shower sump a couple of months ago...a couple of teaspoons every two weeks.... Pre mixed with water and poured down the shower drain... I never checked it until this morning as I wanted to clean it out. This is how it looked after I rinsed it out.... It has never looked this good after a summer

Nice! Do you shower on board? What all makes it into your sump?

It’s a bit pricey, but well worth it. I’ve been using it in my sumps for the last couple of seasons and it’s great!
I’ve also made the switch from soap to body wash and use pan tabs in the AC pans which I think helps too.
I use my stall shower a lot.
While I have never used the handheld shower in the aft head, I pour Noflex down that drain too.

My wife uses a pouf and body wash.... I refuse to use a pouf and stick with my Irish spring bar of soap... No man should shower with a pouf :)... No seriously.
We typically get on the boat Thursday or Friday every weekend and shower everyday on it. Both AC units drain into the sump and the main shower that's it.

We also shower 2-3 days/week and mine looks same. Noflex is a great product.

If ya got it, use it. I have never had a boat that we didn't take full advantage of the head and shower. Our current boat has two heads and only one restriction: Guests must use the guest bathroom. Master bathroom is only for the owners. We had a Class A motorhome for a bunch of years and the feature of a full bathroom onboard was a luxury. We could pull into any rest stop and never had to leave the coach wondering what was lurking in those public rest areas. The only restriction I ever had was in a airplane I once owned that had a "portapotty" hidden below one of the seats and a privacy curtain. The cubic square feet of the airplane was small enough that someone using that "head" could force a depletion of the oxygen system if the rest of us had to use the masks.
