Oil extraction pump

This is largely opinion based, but start with a "title only" search for "oil extractor". There should be LOT'S of information for you there (lot's of previous threads about this).
 
I recently "upgraded" to the flat style electric pump from West Marine. After one use I'm pretty please. I previously had a cheapo $25 pump from Amazon that lasted two seasons before giving up the ghost.

I did the hand pump style for several years. The "flip the switch" factor on the electric pumps is nice...
 
I bought an electric one on Amazon for $29. Have used it four times and it works great - takes just a few minutes to extract 5 qt's of oil. Started out with a manual one from West Marine - didn't work - brought it back to WM and the person there said no surprise they haven't had much luck with them.
 
I can never get the cylinder ones that you have to pump to work very well. Takes me about an hour to drain one motor and I can only get about four courts. Thinking about trying a diesel fuel transfer pump from Harbor Freight. We'll have to buy special fittings and the clear tubes but on another thread I heard that it works good

You guys make me sick. Well... jealous is probably more accurate :) I actually came really close to putting one in my 260DA, but I just couldn't justify it for one engine (with good access, too). Would have been more of a "toy" than a neccessity...

Well... might as well join the bandwagon... ;) I've had a pump-up Mity-Vac 7201 for about 10 years and it gets used on about a dozen oil changes per years. Very happy with it.

Good point. It definitely would have had that feature originally. A bit slow to drain... but darn easy. I have an adapter for my vac pump to make it go a bit faster. But, yeah... remove plug... walk away and do something else... come back and it's done.

Unless the OP's boat is in a slip? But I'm sure it gets cold in Indy, so I can't imagine it stays in the water year round.
 
Just bought the West Marine 6.9qt vacuum pump for $54 on sale.
I also have a Jabsco 12v 5 gallon bucket model that has worked for the last 12 years!
I borrowed the vac type last year and like it better.
IMHO, the vac is quicker, easier and no impeller to fail ever few years. And at a price I can justify replacing when (if) it fails.

Take out your drain plug and there should be a cable attached to it and pull it out and you will see a hose. That black hose is attached to your oil pan

Todd, if the oil hose doesn't come out along with the drain plug, the SS cable has broken (or been disconnected). Look in the bilge - it would then be lying on the bilge floor. It's long enough to be routed up along side the engine, if you want. But then you'll need an oil extractor to suck it out.

No cable attached to it as I take the plug out each weekend. So there is a hose attached to the drain plug and I assume a valve?
 
In the free end of the hose is a small plug that you unscrew. It'll be very obvious once you see it.
 
I'm using this one from northern tool. It works great for the 1st motor but when I start to do the 2nd the soft hose that is connected to the can collapses on itself and slows the process down tremendously. I'm going to replace the soft hose this year with something a bit more stiff to see if that makes a difference.
