Been running the generator all season long (since I bought the boat in June) without issue.

Ran all day yesterday - but on the way back to the dock it alarmed, then shutdown.

At the dock I tried to restart it - it fired up, then sputtered and died. I'm new to this one s- so now I know I should really go back and read the blinking lights. The impellar was replaced in June - so I don't think it's a cooling issue.

My gut is telling me that it could be a fuel issue (due to the sputtering). There is a label on the generator stating that the last filter change was in 2017 - but I'm really hoping that isn't true.

Any things to look for or otherwise report back on?

I would read the codes. It can shut off for lots of reasons, and when it shuts itself off it does sound like its sputters first.

Fault code 36. Now it won’t fire at all. I’m going to try a new fuel filter - hoping that the sticker that states the last change was 2 years ago is an indication.

Code 36 is unspecified engine interruption according to my manual. What’s the fuel level in the tank? Gen fuel pickups are set higher than the engine. Ours pulled the same error when the fuel tank was just above a quarter.
H

also fuel filters are an annual swap out.

Fuel level is 1/2 - maybe a bit less.

I'll swap the filter. Now, being new to the diesel world - is it just that simple - or will I need to bleed any air out of the lines... if so - I'm sure there is a process for that.

Any tips appreciated.

I don't know where you're located but mine did a similar thing as the water up North here started to warm up last spring, and got the same code. The problem got worse every time we went out until my mechanic finally found that there was a very small hole in the plastic tube for the coolant.

Down in Floriduh. It's actually starting to cool off some right now. I'm thinking it's fuel related - likely filter but also possible that with less than 1/2 tank of fuel and really rough seas (5'+) the genny sucked some air.

Turns out the start/stop solenoid went out. (Also known as the actuator...)

Problem is - I can't find where to buy one by googling the part number...
PN: 0151-0779-01
Model: 0175-12A5C1S

Any ideas?

How did you determine it was the start/stop solenoid? Inquiring minds......

Mechanic did it. He verified the fuel pump was working - and verified that nothing was making it past the (or to the) HP pump. He pulled the solenoid - manually held the plunger in and it started.

This part has a new number 306−5006−01 1

It's $500 locally... which seems INSANE. I'm continuing to look.

Went to the local Cummins dealer after shopping it around. Turns out it's just expensive.

However - there is a similar part (one number off) for $90 that I'd be willing to try in the future. The replacement Cummins part is similar - but the shaft is a different length, diameter, and the overall unit is a different size... so much so that we didn't think it was going to work...

20 minutes later - it works fine. Which tells me this - if it bolts up - it would likely work. This is NOT a highly technical piece.
