500/520 DB official thread

Do you know what your EGTs are at 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000 RPMs which is where most all QSM-11s with 660 or 715 HP are? That’s were the rubber hits the road when EGTs climb well above 1,000 degrees, the dry exhaust gas manifolds start cooking, expansion and EG leaks start flowing from what I’ve read? With out EGT analog or preferable digital gauges you’ve got no way to know where you heat temps are hitting. The Cummins digital engine info only gives you water temps not EGT info!

BlackDog did all my prop tuning and I’m running no cupping, pitch is 28.5” now.
I agree it is important on these engines. EGT monitors are on the list for me for one of this winters projects

Anyone ever take off the rear settee seat and bolster?

My shop said: " You should be aware that, although the seat will be possible to remove, I don't see any way to get the bolster off short of removing the davit and box that it is in . It appears to be through bolted before the davit was installed."

I want to get them re-upholstered. Mike

I believe the bolster is held on with “Christmas tree” fasteners. Same as a car door panel just pull hard at the corner and you’ll see one of the fastners.
Maybe get a plastic clip remover from harbor freight
Mine was recovered and they never touched the crane

Would anyone know why I have no power to the throttles. No lights or anything. Installer put new mfd last week and 1st time on boat since. Fuse? These are for the cummins qsm 11

Went down to the boat today to check on her, run the engines. I always turn on the engine room camera before I start the engines - and as soon as I turned on the port engine, I noticed a lot of water rushing in. Shut the engines off, went below, and found that a muskrat had crawled up the exhaust and chewed through the bellows. Found him sleeping under the stern thruster. Amazing that he chewed threw all that silicon.

After dispensing of him, ordered new exhaust bellow (plus a spare), and tomorrow will order grates for the exhaust.

Checking the exhaust bellows is now part of my pre-launch check list!

Wow, that’s crazy. I have the muskrat grates and now I am glad I do.

The previous owner of my boat would install inflatable cylinders (they sort of look like short fenders) to go in the exhaust ports for the off season just to keep the muskrats out.

If you font mind sharing where you’re ordering the grates I might as well do like wise. Haven’t seen that problem where we are but about six miles away another friend with 500SD and Mann’s did.

Many thanks,

John

I have the Mercury throttles so I am not sure what the Glendining set up looks like but there are lots of wires under the dash so I am sure it has something to do with the install of the MFDs. Something got disconnected, wires got pulled on Etc.

Anyone have experience with the Hurley product? It seems worth trying before having custom grates made.
Mine look the same as the Hurley but they were existing when I bought the boat. If they are the Hurley then the fit the exhaust fine.

Yes - two of us with 58's in Chattanooga have them. They work great $500 for two 12" size. My dockmate's previous 52 had muskrats in it three times. Ate though the silicone boots every time...

Follow up what I found on this issue. I had Cummins come down and it took quite some time for them to diagnose this issue. Turns out a fault code for the throttles had been thrown appropriately 250 times and they ended up having to replace 2 resistors. Once they replaced those they were able to get power back to the throttles but still no lights on throttles and it still didn’t work. They then replaced the whole throttle assembly and now I’m back in business. They couldn’t say why this happened. It was a very expensive fix but it is fixed.

I am moving to a new marina next year and am not going to have cable tv at the slip. Not a huge deal as I don’t watch it to much anyway but I want to get my over the air channels working. I figure I’ll have to update the antenna to the Glomex HD and a couple of the TVs. I have already replaced a couple to smart TVs. I have removed the old intellian dome so don’t plan on going back to satellite tv. I’m not on boat to see but is there a A/B switch? I really haven’t paid that much attention to this detail. I think there is a booster or something in cabinet under the salon tv but not to sure. Wondering if anyone knows how this would work.

My (07 52 Sedan Bridge) does not have an A/B switch. I do have the Glomex Signal Booster that switches from Cable TV (at the dock connection) to the Glomex Antenna. My roof mounted antenna is not “HD” (and is the original 2007 model) but does not need to be to receive all of the available over the air channels; HD or analog.

You will, as I recently learned, need to replace the analog tv’s to Digital or add digital converters. I would not put money into converters. The new digital (HD) TV’s are pretty inexpensive have a much better picture and should have channel guides. Best upgrade for the money so far.

Is that switch located in the cabinet under the salon tv?
