Watching the storm: Dorian

I’m still tied up and secure in Ft. Myers. I have received more than a few calls from east coaster asking me what they should do...simple answer is I wish you called me last week. A 650 owner called this morning and said he was told to leave his marina in Ft. Lauderdale (that would have been a given to me) and set out this morning hoping to travel south on the ICW. Well, the bridges all went into lock down yesterday afternoon so he was forced to go out in the ocean. I told him to head south to Marathon and he just texted me that he has arrived at Post Card Marina.....whewwww. I will try and head back, probably Wednesday morning, just praying my house in Cape Canaveral survived.

Rusty,

That must have been a scary ride with beam seas and high winds. He is lucky that Dorian is moving slow. Hopefully it turns northeast, accelerates away soon and avoids your home.

Best,

So long, Nippers. I have a friend with a wonderful home on the beach in horse shoe cove on Treasure Cay. I imagine he will lose 2 floors, at least. We'll never stop them, but it is time to seriously try to figure out how to weaken them. I don't mean nuke em. That idea was first floated in 1945. That hasn't stuck yet.
And my worst fears confirmed by Canadian News (CBC.CA). They are there, with another couple, and have taken refuge in the attic. First floor gone, second likely unless this thing moves out. They are running from water, and running out of runway.

Hate to hear that.
It's a REALLY bad idea to get into the attic. There are a number of folks that have gotten trapped that way and couldn't get out when the water continues to rise. We had some friends that got trapped that way in Hurricane Harvey, they are lucky to have been rescued but are still dealing with some emotional trauma

Part of the roof was already gone. I'm sure we will get a story later this week. I just might not want to hear it.
I heard from some family with property down there on Man-o-War. Nippers is reported to be completely destroyed, the dune it was built on collapsed from the storm surge.

Man-o-War has severe damage. The harbor was used as a safe haven. At least 45 boats in the southern harbor. Every boat on the island has sunk, none survived (including my family’s boats). The island’s ferry sunk too. A ww2 landing craft barge was brought in to save small craft; that sunk and all the boats on it were lost.

Brutal storm for the northern Bahamas (CA Obvious statement of the day).

I've flipped back and forth today (home sick) the Weather Channel, and seeing this thing has been basically stationary on Freeport all day - one can only imagine the destruction happening there.

Is there anywhere to "hide" on islands that have an elevation of 10' or so, and the storm surge is 10' - 15' in addition to the wind? I suppose short of a structure being built to survive a CAT 5 hurricane - there's probably no where to hide.

Depends on the island, but not much place to hide if its low. Surge is reported to be 20-23 feet. One house on my brother-in-law’s property was about 5 feet off the water and we’re guessing it’s a total loss. His upper house is on the top of the island. No word on that yet; it may have escaped the surge but sustained other damage.

For those who haven't boated to the Abaco there is a morning VHF broadcast called Barometer Bob on Channel 68; it's a morning ritual to listen in when cruising there especially for inlet conditions. It is paralleled on http://www.barometerbob.org. The daily Ch 68 audio is on the site. A couple of clips from the web cameras (now gone)

I can only imagine how all our places in the Abacos and Grand Bahamas look today. Prayers upon Prayers!

Thanks for the offer Carter, but I am doing better than most camping out on this 650 right downtown. Have also enjoyed nice weather here at the City Yacht Basin ....BUT, about ten minutes ago, a feller leaped off the high-rise bridge next to me. He was fished out of the water by my new hero, a crusted old sailboater, who jumped into action in his 3hp tender. LEO boat flew up a minute later and held the tender next to his boat until they motored over here to the marina. They had the jumper on the dock and he did not look too well. Never saw him stand or lean up. From the height of that bridge it would seem his whole frame must have been busted up pretty good....hope it goes well for him.

Bahamas, Painfull.
Brutal....

I've flown into MYGF many times - and saw a video today showing it under a good 5' of water, with waves rolling over the top of it all.

Ugly stuff.....

My dock mate in Chattanooga has a home on West End - next door to John Travolta - I can only imagine what is left after 36 hours of a CAT 5 Hurricane...

Have a 30 year friend that lives in Eleuthera. He was lucky to be a bit south. Thinking of ways to help. Any ideas? All I can think of is to donate to the Red Cross.

Just gut wrenching images coming out of the Bahamas. Salvation Army estimates 16,000 homes completely obliterated, and I can only imagine that number will go up. Not to mention the loss of life. There was nowhere to run.

Looking like this will be a non-event for Florida though ...for the most part.

Gut wrenching is right.

Abaco, completely obliterated - and the storm was moving at this time. Freeport had this thing sitting on it for more than a day. Scary stuff, no where to run or hide on those islands.

Since you asked.

My brother in-law, who has property in and deep ties to Man-o-Way cay in the Bahamas, has started a gofundme for hurricane relief. The storm is not done, but reports of damage are grim to say the least. The harbor was used as a hurricane hole, and every boat (including the ferries) has been sunk. Many structures have severe damage or are plain destroyed. So far my brother-in-law has lost 2 boats, likely 1 house, most of a second house, and has severe damage to a main house. If you are inclined to help out, please consider donating to this campaign. I have sent my own money here to help the residents of Abaco.

Here is the Dorian-Abaco Relief GoFundMe

Go Fund me page might be the way to go. Having been part of a disaster relief organization I would urge anyone who can to donate their time to help on the ground and to be very cautious about giving your money to organizations (well known or otherwise) that purport to help. Check them out first.

At 1:18 of this above video are what's left of the docks at Conch Inn, Mangos and Harborview Marinas. All the destruction is so sad.
As to donations to the relief effort, we received an e-mail from The Royal Marsh Harbor Yacht Club yesterday that asked us to consider saving up what we might consider to donate, but do not send anything yet. The club is trying to find a reputable institution that will handle the monies and make sure it ALL gets to the right places. Apparently as someone stated above, there are some who do not have the peoples best interests in mind.
