OFFICIAL 390/40 Motor Yacht Thread

I just had a windshield sun shade installed. The goal was to reduce the heat in the cockpit during the high summer as well as to prevent sun damage over time. It seems to fulfill the first purpose in spades. Today was a 95-degree plus day in our area. Once the AC was turned on, the cockpit rapidly cooled off and was much more comfortable than usual on a hot day.
My original vision was to use a black mesh material so that one could still see out of the windshield. The installer convinced me that since I had no intention of leaving it up underway, stamoid would be much lighter, foldable and easier to take on and off and that white would better reflect heat than black. The material cost him a little more than the original estimate but he insisted on keeping the price the same so that I wouldn't think he was trying to gouge me.

I think the fabricator did a great job. Close up, it appears well fitted and secure.

There is a reinforced area where the windshield vent mechanism protrudes, a nice touch.

This was the first stage of a job that includes a new makrolon enclosure for the aft cockpit. Pics to follow once that is done.

Hello all. Still loving my 40 MY. Came across a Facebook group for owners of the 390 or 40 MYs. Would encourage everyone to search for it and join. It is Sea Ray 390-40 Motor Yacht group. Robert

Try Flounder Pounder (fpmarine.com), they may have it, especially if it was used across more than one model. Otherwise there are plexiglass fabricators out there, I would not think making a new one would be a huge challenge.
It's becoming a huge challenge. I found the glass, but now need the frame.

New cockpit aft enclosure installed and looks great, at least to me. Glass is Makrolon, canvas Sunbrella. The fabricator was a joy to work with. We spent time discussing options over three visits he made prior to starting. We decided not to include smiles or screens because we almost never need to open up the canvas given an air-conditioned cockpit. When we do need to open up, it's to get access to the aft deck or to reduce sail area when the wind is up while docking and we're usually in a hurry to do that.

The window over the aft door attaches to the overhead. I wanted to get it completely out of the way for docking/undocking and while doing maintenance.

Port side window also attaches to the overhead. Opening this window and the one over the door should enable us to reduce the effect of wind when we need it.

The installer added a lot of nice small touches such as more hold-downs and lanyards on every zipper pull. He replaced the original mounting tracks as well. I expect this enclosure will be much easier to take down and re-install than the original version.

[QUOTE="alnav, post: 1076883,

Looks fantastic. That is probably on our list soon. What was the cost, if you don't mind sharing.

Hello All, We are currently looking at the 390 Motoryachts. We live on the Chesapeake Bay which can be quite a rough ride at times. Can anyone here comment on the handling of the 2004/2005 MY in rough seas. If there is anyone who has this boat and cruise the Bay, we would welcome any comments you have. Thanks!

I have one and it works well in the Chesapeake. There is one 420 MY that just came on the market, similar boat. E mail me if interested and I'll put you in touch...... rgdodson54@verizon.net

Saw your cockpit table, and love it. I think this is what I want for ours. How is the space with it? This is the slider, right? Is it free standing or did you attach it?

Is this the link? https://www.marineteak.co.uk/folding--sliding-teak-tables/nautic-star-slide-60
Aussie, yes, our table is from Marine Teak and we've been very happy with it. Both outer leaves slide in to make a very slender profile which provides more room when we don't need the full table. The table is mounted to the original base so can be moved around. I think the mounting is standard from Marine Teak but I believe they will adapt to whatever mounting you specify to them.

Thank you! I currently don't have one (wasn't included), so will need to acquire a base/mount as well.

Happy Black Friday!

Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving. Or a nice Thursday outside the US!

Anyway, I've had an intermittent problem this season.

My steering was very tight, as if there was no power assist. I could still steer, but it took a lot of effort.

This only happened about four or five times. It would last the entire trip, but be gone the next time.

I figured I needed to check the fluid level in the steering reservoir.

I just can't find it! The manual says it should be on the rear bulkhead of the engine compartment. I do not see it.

Anyone know exactly where it is?

Cosmo, my steering pump is in the wheel assembly at the helm, I assumed the 390's have the same Seastar system. There also may be an electric pump for the autopilot if you have one, mine is in the compartment behind the aft bulkhead of the master head.
Steering fluid is typically checked and re-filled starting at the helm. If you have a helm pump there will be a filling port at the base of the steering column, it's a small round cap that unscrews. You may want to get a bottle of Seastar fluid and importantly, a filler tube, before you get started. You can refill using these if the fluid is low but you probably need to purge the system of air, typically a two-person job with one at the helm and one standing by the ram, which you probably saw if you pulled up the master mattress to look in the aft bilge. There are several YouTube videos that may help (Google "Seastar hydraulic helm fluid") and there is also info on the Seastar web site.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the ceiling light covers in the salon. I do not
Want to break them. Going to order LED’s for them.
