Wonder how this is happening in the great economy. This is a pretty big place. Much bigger than the nearby one mentioned in the article. The only thing I can think of is there are a few other dealerships that carry various brands of smaller boats not far away.
I think they run the gas dock and marina there too.

Wow... I wonder how this affects the Marina. They also note that they seem to be keeping the other smaller locations open. I know the Huntington office seems to cater to larger boats.

Wow are they closing the marina as well? Looks pretty empty in there recently with many empty slips.

I have heard the family that owned Surfside 3, before Marinemax bought the business, may takeover the marina. The family sold the business, but not the land. Marinemax has been leasing the property from the family. Now they will probably just pick up where they left off after selling the business.

Yes the Barbara’s who now own Seaside up the block own the land. They sold the name surfside 3 and leased the land to marinemax. Great business deal for them.

Exactly .. MAtthew and his brother were very SMART !

Would make a great dockominium. That would also keep it from being developed like so many other places over the years.

In our area we had a very successful family owned tool and equipment rental, the sold to a national conglomerate and did well. National Co killed the business, non compete expired, restarted right where they left off. Just heard a rumor a national co is buying them out yet again. LOL

In my industry there was a tool distributor bought out by a large manufacturer but only the business not the building. I understand it was in the neighborhood of $10 million.

The business was originally started by the father and his daughter took it over. He started by purchasing used and auction tools and reselling them. When the sale went through the daughter and her daughter were retained by the large corporation. Before the sale the father would putter around but stopped fter the sale to take care of his ailing wife.

The wife passed and the father (now in his 80's) wanted something to do so he restarted a business buying used and auction tools and reselling them and was located 2 blocks away from the original business.

One day the daughter gets a phone call - the sales manager would be in town and wanted to meet with her. She got her walking papers from the large corporation. Her daughter was promoted to the branch manager position.

At the same time - the lease on the building was being renegotiated. The lawyer for the large corporation said "You are asking too much money for the lease considering where this building is located". The realtor replied "Sorry, this amount is what the old gentleman who owns the property wants". He got the increase...

One day the phone rings at the fathers new business. The daughter picks up the phone and say "Good morning. Thank you for calling XYZ Tooling. This is Harriet". Her ex manager replies "It is true that you are working there. You know that you have a non-compete clause!" Harriet replied "Come in and look at the books. I am not getting paid and I am not in any management position. I am simply helping my father out by answering the phone." Since she had been in business for 30 plus years - all of the customers had followed her and large corporation store had lost business.

The large corporation business ended up closing down in that location. The fathers new business moved back into their original building and is thriving today...

MarineMax was losing money at that location. It is a big facility and you have to sell a lot of boats to make it work. I do know that MarineMax's service department had good mechanics and hopefully they will land jobs with the people taking over.

Karma is alive and well my friends........

Surprised they were losing money. You would think that the number of rental slips and the income they generate would be enough to cover the nut and the sales and parts business would be gravy.
I think they took over the fuel dock too a couple of years ago.
That’s got to be a money maker on that canal.

You never know. At my marina diesel is $4.099 per gallon. But if I cruise up to a marina just 14 miles north I can get fuel at $2.749. Do you think I fuel at home? With 350 gallon tanks that is a large difference.

I save about a buck a gallon myself by having a guy come with a truck to refuel me but that’s not an option for a lot of people around here. I own my dock property so I can pretty much do what I want, but I doubt that any Marinas around here that sell fuel would let a truck come in.
The fuel dock at that Marine Max is usually pretty busy so they must be making some money.
It’s also a pretty good sized marina and their prices aren’t cheap so it’s surprising the they aren’t making money.
The only thing I can think of is that with the shift to day boating their is a lot more local competition in the area for sales.

I spoke to the Service Manager at that facility a couple of weeks ago about a two interior referrals ($10k jobs). He said that store Manager told him to dial back all work to commissioning new boats and that he couldn't take on any refit work. He was down to his last two mechanics and struggling to get the new boats ready for customers. He lamented the days when they would rebuild boats with water damage and take on insurance work which generated a lot of income for the facility.

While I agree that they should be making money.....what is less clear is the operating expenses of the facility and the deal they struck with the owners. For example....I'm not sure that Marine Max got the slip or gas revenue. If they did.....something else must have been bleeding cash.

At least when I paid for gas there I was charged by MarineMax direct. While is could always have been a DBA but it was a MM employee that took care of me. I also was offered a discount since I was in for service. Probably not the cheapest around but it was convenient.

I think MarineMax took over the gas dock a year or so after Sandy. The previous operator got pushed out.
Not sure if they still do it, but the previous operator had a deal with the restaurant for late dockage in one of his spots. If you were dining in the restaurant he would let you dock for free. After he closed you could use either of his spots.
