460 DA Owners Thread

Anyone ever added cockpit heat and air to the 460? I am considering a winter project. I have not been able to find the link if it has been discussed.

TIA

I did it 2 years ago...pretty easy job in my opinion. I was able to get a 16K BTU unit under the helm seat. I have some pictures of the job at this link: https://wolfsden460sundancer.shutterfly.com/pictures/29

You can message me if you need more information.

Back to the drawing board on our boat search as the Wisconsin boat appears to be off the market.

I'm heading to brackish water to look at a very nice 460 today. Everyone in Chicago is telling me not to do a brackish or salt water boat. My counter is "there are a lot of salt water boats out there that give people years of love." The one I'm looking at is a 2004 460 with only 450 hrs on the Cummins engines. They kept pretty good maintenance records. I know corrosion, through hull fittings, etc. issues. What else should I be concerned with? Not considered a salt-ish water boat before. Which ever boat we chose, we'll be taking her into salt, so, I'm not that adverse with some help from those who "know". Thanks in advance.

Walter, call me. We just did the same thing last January . Too many things to think about in a posting. Id be happy to share my experience .

I wouldn’t rule out a salt water boat but you’re going to really have to find the one where an owner hasn't ignored any items. My strategy would be to do exactly what you’re doing. I know of 2 that sold in the 250k range that were ideal! As far as the hull you don’t have anything different to look for. Searay gelcoat can be polished out and made new again in almost any condition. Engine wise you need to look at the raw water cooling system as most need new aftercoolers if they haven’t already been replaced. Internal systems such as air conditioning would be another potential issue and probably most are nearing end of life in the southern climates.

Charlie,

Mike hit it on the head. When I started I was only getting 2600 max RPM on the starboard and 2590 on the port.
I originally asked the prop shop to take some pitch out and they said that would be to much and they could be
more precise and get me the 80-90 RPMs with a little cup removal. After hitting the 2680 I checked the fuel burn
on the chart and they hit the numbers perfectly
Thanks guys! Will try that. Anyone know of a way to get gph individually for each engine? My Mercury SystemView only shows combined gph from what I can see.

Has any of you 460 owners drilled a drain behind the captains chair in the floor? Just wondering. It is a pain in the butt when you wash the cockpit that the water pools behind on the floor.
I haven't, but now that I put new carpet on the boat, I am planning to drill a hole and glue a fitting from behind and put a hose on it.

After cleaning the a/c sea strainer today I was wondering how does everyone clean the ac lines. I was thinking about barnicle buster but how would I get the water to circulate back to a pail from all three ac's?

John

I use phosphoric acid from Home Depot. It’s called prep and etch and its in the paint section.

I use a homemade system which is easy to replicate. I have a rule 2000 bilge pump mounted in the bottom of a bucket with input and output lines and 12v clamp connectors. Circulate the solution for about 45 minutes per line and you won’t believe what it clears out. The return line I made with clear tubing and is about 40 feet long. All I do is feed it in at the manifold and out after each ac back into the bucket

Hi Josh

Can you please be a little more specific as to where you feed the solution into and out of the raw water system.

When you say you feed it into the manifold, where exactly, and where do you take it out of the A/C unit back to your bucket.

Much appreciated

Graham

No problem.

I remove the hoses from the manifold in the engine room and connect one to my bucket. Then I run the other hose from my bucket to the hose I take off of the they hull output from the ac. ( I know the 460 originally had a common return loop but my ac’s are all plumbed seperately to drain overboard) this allows the solution to clean one ac loop at a time. I have found 45 minutes each line is about the time it takes to really dissolve the crud.

Does that help Graham? I can take pics of the bucket setup itself when I go to the boat if you need them.

Photos would be appreciated.

Where are the hoses connected to a manifold in the engine room?

The only way I can see to put the cleaning solution into the system would be by removing the output hose from the seawater strainer in the engine room, just before it goes into the pump, or would I pump the solution into the system after the raw water pump. In my case this would put solution into both air con systems.

I would then need to find the return pipe where it goes into the common outlet pipe back overboard.

Photos may help for sure.

Hi guys,

I wanted to say many thanks to Bob, Josh and the rest of the crew. As a result of all the advice, we chose to pass on most of the reported "pristine" boats out there. My wife kept seeing the disappointment on my face while reinforcing that we'd just know when it was the right boat. Well, I'm happy to say that we (on a fluke) fell in love with and contracted on a 02 510 DA. She's local and known by our respected boat people in Chicago and simply pristine. Survey's happening early next week. I'll miss you, but, won't be too far. The 510 DA Owners Thread is close by. Thanks again to everyone...

Hello all, I am changing my Thermostats in my port engine. I have the thermostats for my 6CTA but I am curious as it I need any other seals or gaskets before I start. Cummins said they did not think that I needed anything else.

TIA

I think you do. Call seaboard marine if you need to know right now. Otherwise quickserve is your friend. I’m mobile at the moment t

Going from memory, I believe that there is a gasket for the thermostat housing
