Hoping to make this trip for the first time in late August.....can anyone tell me what to expect or even a preferred route?....(Lk St. Clair to Grand Bend (ON)..then cross over Huron to Lexington...thanks

You probably realize that there are new "no wake" zones in the St. Clair River so the trip will take longer than in the past. From the Bluewater bridge you can get up to Lexington in 45-50 minutes or Grand Bend in under two hours, not sure what the time is to cross the lake but I would guess at 60-90 minutes; they are across from one another.
Another option is Bayfield where we were last weekend. Harbourmaster Fred and his crew will help you tie (to their rather short docks) and it's well protected. Pretty harbor and the town is a lot classier than Grand Bend. G.B. is fun but with a much younger crowd. Neither facility is quite up to the standard of Michigan harbors but they are very accommodating. I believe that Lexington is slated for a major reconstruction next year.
