I just picked up a one owner 1989 180 BR with the Mercruiser 4.3 Ltr. The neutral cut out linkage is out of rig but in attempting to rig it properly I've discovered that there is a lot of slop in the control cable linkages. Instead of trying to tighten and shim and re-bush things Id like to just replace the entire system. Does any one know what I need to order and from who? I'm about to start the research but figured I'd start here. It would be nice to stay with OEM parts but if there is a quality aftermarket system or parts available Im open to using that as well. This is my seventh boat but I never had to replace the entire shift system before so looking for a little assistance.
Thanks

Have the same problem with my 1990 200 BR.
Marina quoted me approximately $800.00 to replace entire system.
They told me that is only option.
Please keep us informed what you find out and end up doing.
Thanks.

After a little shopping, it looks like a quality after market shifter and cables will run between $300 to $450 depending on cable lengths required. At $125/ Hour and I could see a seasoned mechanic taking 3 to 4 hours to remove the old and run and rig the new cables so $800 seems to be a pretty good estimate. It looks like Ill be removing mine this weekend measuring the cables and ordering the parts. Ill post the results. Ive read reviews on the shifter and folks report that the job is fairly straight forward.

How did you make out?
Mine lasted the season, shifts OK but cannot use the shift disengage function.
Where did you find the after market shifter?
Thanks
Brian

I found what will likely work at Defender Marine but after a little lube and exercise mine is working at about 80%, enough to get me through this season. I’ll pull the drive and engine this winter and go thru everything for next spring.
I’ll post my progress and share what I found
