Good Morning,

A buddy of mine has a 04 280 Sundancer with twin 4.3 Mercruisers was coming home from Fire Island yesterday morning and slightly bumped the bottom. He drifted just outside of the buoys. He was going 5mph. No big deal he moved into deeper water and tried to get up on plane. As he was adjusting his trim he heard a loud bang and the engine cut out. He attempted to restart and it would only crank for one half second and stop. He called Tow Boat and was towed 25 miles back to our marina.

Any thought would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I forgot to mention he has alfa drives on the boat. I am thinking blew a drive or threw a rod.

He pulled the plugs this afternoon. No water came out. Good News. Mechanic thinks he blew the drive. Going to pull the boat tomorrow.

Update,

The drive self destructed. Mechanic said it was one of the worst ones hes has seen. New drive on order and he hopes to be back in the water by the end of the week.

Good to hear this is a quick fix, and your buddy needs to hold on to that mechanic. The season flashes by......

Was this caused from the grounding or trimming the outdrive way up in trailer mode? Do you have pictures of what actually broke? A slow speed grounding on the south shore typically does not blow up the gearcase.

I haven't seen the drive. But according to the mechanic, the Alpha drives are know to fail. From looking at the props. What ever he hit it was in the middle of the boat. Both props show signs sand digging. Did this cause the failure or was it wear and tear on a 14 year old drive. Or a combination of both. We will never know.
