Senate Bill S5685 - Boating Safety (Brianna's Law)

Perhaps it's different on the North Shore? I see the Brookhaven harbormaster patrolling every weekend that I'm out. Last weekend I saw the harbormaster, Suffolk Police Marine, and USCG in Port Jeff and Mount Sinai. Although this weekend I had a guest on the boat that's a Suffolk PD officer and he called over the Suffolk Marine "N" boat to chat when they passed through the mooring field. I learned that their patrol hours are limited by the available budget for fuel.

I don't mind seeing the patrols. Helps keep the knuckleheads and PWC operators in check.

You don’t see them all that much down here. Nassau PD doesn’t seem to have too many boats, the only time I’ve seen a Suffolk PD boat in the last few years was out at Fire Island, and the Bay Constables that the towns have down here seem to be all operating on pretty restrictive budgets.
If Andy boy is concerned about it he could send more State Park Police boats down to Long Island. I think the only time I’ve seen one of those is at the Jones Beach Air Show on Memorial Day weekends.
Maybe instead of giving away free stuff to illegal immigrants who work off the books and don’t pay taxes, or building billion dollar bridges to honor his father, he could send some grant money down to Long Island for enforcement on the water.

It was just a few years ago when NE boaters were complaining about being over policed. It was then that Homeland Security was handing out wads of cash, to about any jurisdiction with water, money for boats and officers.

The money is gone. The New Buffalo boat sits in its slip, seen it out once this season. When asked about it, they do not have the officers with training, and money to run it. We still have Sheriff and CG plenty, but sharing that once the Fed tit goes dry many jurisdictions can't afford the boats we gave them. Just a waste...

I see a good PD presence in Patchogue river. On a busy weekend they are flagging guys down and boarding. We do have a bunch of restaurant/bars up and down the strip here.....it can be a shit show with traffic

I don't intend this to get political.

But I seriously doubt "Albany" is going to send funds to LI for boating enforcement. IMO, they tend to treat the island as a piggy bank for the rest of the state. From my regular attendance at the school board meetings and sitting on my local Civic Association's executive board, LI's representation in Albany is weak. The Gov cut Brookhaven's state support for highway maintenance - the largest incorporated town and the one with the most lane-miles of road in the state.

And I agree that renaming the Tappan Zee bridge after his father was a pure vanity project. It was attached to another bill and passed by the legislature literally in the dead of night.

Actually, the whole state is a piggy bank to the crooks up in Albany. We’ve got friends and relatives that live upstate and they’re in the same boat as we are.
I used to go to school board meetings all the time too when my kids were younger. The school board always liked to point out how unfair it is that NYC property taxes are so much lower. I used to live in the City and still have relatives that live there. While they’re property taxes are lower, they aren’t as low as the thieves out here want you to believe.
The locals out here always leave out the fact that NYC residents also pay an income tax that, among other things, goes toward their schools.
What the school boards never talk about is the fact that teachers on Long Island make a lot more money than their counterparts in NYC or upstate do, Long Island is top heavy with administrators, those administrators make an insane amount of money, and lots of Long Island Districts have athletic facilities that other parts of the state would kill for.
Bottom line, property owners in NYC get screwed too, so does the rest of the state, the thieving politicians just stick it to them in a different way.

Back in 2008 it was reported that Long Island sent Albany 8.1 billion in tax dollars with a return of 5 billion in state money back to Long Island. That was almost 12 years ago, a 3 billion dollar short fall. NYC is a leech on the rest of the state. Whether it’s social programs, education, security, NYC spends money it doesn’t have and uses the rest of state as it’s lender. Long Island could/should be its own state.

How much did NYC send up to Albany that year and what percentage did they get back? The income taxes from the high earners in NYC, the state 1% mortgage tax on the very expensive NYC real estate, NYC hotel taxes, entertainment taxes and state portion of sales tax collected in NYC have to be astronomical.
The city generates an incredible amount of money for the rest of NY and the tri-State area. That’s why the roads, trains and commuter buses going in and out of it every day are packed at rush hour.
No shortage of people taking advantage of social programs and freebies on Long Island. My wife works for a social service agency out here and you’d be amazed at how many people are being taken care of. Next time you’re in a Walmart or Supermarket out here keep an eye out for the number of people using EBT cards. What really gets me is when they pay with the EBT cards and then push their cart out to the parking lot and load the groceries in to the back of a late model luxury car.
Lots of tax cheats out here too.
How about trying to get work done around your house by a contractor on Long Island and paying in other than cash?
No shortage of “off the books” workers out here.
Comrade Cuomo started giving free College to kids from families making under 125k a year a few years ago. I’d be interested to see a breakdown of where the recipients of that “freebie” are from by County.
Bottom line:
Don’t buy in to the propaganda the local politicians feed you. They love to point fingers and give you half a story. I’ll bet the guy who told you about how much money Long Island sends to Albany and what percentage they get back doesn’t provide that specific statistic with you about NYC or any other municipalities or regions in New York State.
Statistics may not lie, but lies and half truths make statistics.
The real truth is the system is broken all over New York State and Long Island is no exception. The voters are idiots!
Childhood friends of mine (I’m 65) moved to North Carolina in December of 2008 to escape the insanity here. While visiting here back in June they were saying they may have to leave there soon too. Their reason? The same idiots who voted in all the crooks in New York, then fled, are moving to places like North Carolina and are doing the same thing down there.
We have other friends who moved to Wellington Florida many years ago. Way back in the 1990’s. Property taxes are jumping up down there too. Why? All the idiots from New York have made it like Long Island with Palm trees.

Like the guy around here who shows up at the food pantry in an Escalade.

You can't fix stupid.

Amen!
BTW: Never fails. Just left the local Walmart. Stopped to pick up a couple of cases of water to bring to the boat.
Sure enough, two women ahead of me use an EBT card. They’re together. I pay for my two cases of Poland Spring and walk out to the parking lot. Lo and behold, what do I see as I’m walking to my car? They’re fat a$$es loading their goods in to a black Mercedes that was parked in a Handicap spot.
The car was equipped with the obligatory handicap sign hanging from the mirror.
Not sure which rubbed me wrong more. Was it the use of the EBT card, or the handicap tag being used by two women almost half my age that other than an obvious penchant for junk food and a likely aversion to exercise, had no obvious physical ailments?
Picture one of those young horizontally challenged people you can generally find draped over a motorized scooter at places like Disney World with a massive beverage cup in one hand and giant turkey leg in the other..........
What irony.......
Can’t make this stuff up!
I contemplated taking a picture of the scene before me to document this atrocity. My initial intention was to post it somewhere with an appropriate description and comment, but realizing that I would probably be accused of being something that nobody likes to be accused of being (use imagination here), I reconsidered and went on my way.
My wife gets crazy when we’re together and I point these things out to her. Not sure what makes her more angry. The abuse of the system, or me being able to notice and point these things out to her? But after all these years this once guilty bleeding heart liberal social worker is currently somewhere to the right of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.

By no means do I care what NYC contributed to the state any year. The return on tax dollars flowing off of Long Island to Albany is my problem. Long Island would be fine without the rest of the state, that was my only point

I’ll agree to disagree about Long Island being fine without the rest of the State.
My point was that despite what local school and elected officials would lead you to believe, the return from Albany that Long Island gets is not much different than the rest of the State.
Our problem is that while the State, local school administrators and municipalities love to point the finger at each other, they’re all to blame for the huge tax mess.
