40 sedan bridge forum

Found a 98 near me that is listed for only 62k (gas engines, 500 hours), however, I can tell from the pictures that a ton of work is needed to get it looking good again. Can someone give me a rough estimate of the cost to replace all canvas/enclosures and all carpet? Also, what do you think it would cost to replace all upholstery in the salon and on the bridge?

I realize these things can vary greatly depending on the level of quality, but I'm really just looking for a very rough idea, so I can decide if it is even worth spending half a day to go look at the boat.

Thanks in advance!

We are getting new CANVAS on our 400 right now. It’s completely custom, So we’re not getting it from the OEM vendor. Full custom helm enclosure, fully new custom aft enclosure, infinity carpet on the helm, the stairs, the cockpit, and the swim platform. In addition, we added a support beam to the helm structure so that the aft-most glass comes straight down, not an angle. That should eliminate the leak that is common in the aft glass on a lot of these boats. More importantly, it allows you to sit all around the table without the people in the back having to hunch over. All that being said, it comes in around $12K. I should have pictures to post here in a couple days.

Canvas typically will be in the neighborhood of 5K. Carpet varies on how and what you install. A 98 with only 500 hours is a very low utilized boat. Probably will need a lot of engine updates - hoses, filters, belts.

Custom canvas for my former 320DA cost about $5k. For the whole helm AND aft cockpit? You’re low.

He did say "Ballpark"... so I quoted the minor leagues... LOL.

Those are expensive "cameras".... ;)

Isn't there a saying...something about, the cheapest boat you buy may be the most expensive one you ever own?
If the "for sale" pics show a neglected boat aesthetically, then everything was neglected. Like Heisenberg said, "Tread lightly."

Agreed.

Thanks to everyone who replied so fast

7-10k on canvas, 5k is what I paid for custom hardwood. I have not done upholstery.

I have to agree here. It feels superficial, I know. But if an owner can’t be bothered to wash and care for his boat occasionally, how often did he change the oil, the impellers or service the after coolers? I’ve walked away from a boat because the owner left it a mess, including empty beer cans on the bridge, even when he knew a showing was coming! No, thanks. I love a good deal, but I want to buy my machines from owners that are more meticulous than I am about maintenance and care.

We did all of our upholstery changing it from 90's green to navy blue. I pulled it all out over winter and dropped it off at a local shop. I supplied my own upholstery as well. I was pretty picky about what went on there if we were going to go to all of the trouble. Labor to have it recovered with me dropping it all off was $2500. Maybe $600-700 in material if I remember. I did the master stateroom bolsters myself in my garage. I also did the flooring which was Plasteak. Think materials were around $1500 for that. I took my time and did it during the winter over several weekends, tackling one area at a time. The entire boat was transformed from a "green" boat to a blue boat from the new bimini top to a new boot stripe. The Searay graphics above the side windows were removed completely.

Nice work. Amazing what that new color does.

We are going to need pictures of that rubber elbow and exhaust hose replacement, when you do it.
Thanks Paul and Bill for your replies on the hose.
I am going to replace the 6” exhaust hose and rubber elbows on the top of the underwater exhaust tube and figured that as long as the exhaust hose is out of the way, I will replace the other hoses back in those corners also, I most likely will buy a 50’ roll of hose and do the hose from the overboard discharge to the seacock and the deck waste fitting section now and do the rest this fall.

Well, I decided to do the whole shebang now while the wind is blowing this week.
Started up front, heads thru the pit of misery.

through the bulkhead (Hole wasn't big enough for the Trident hose which is definitely thicker wall than the original MPI hose) Had to enlarge the hole, then epoxy coat the plywood, cost me an extra day. still have to silicone it.

up through the wires and around the stringer

took off the aftercooler and removed the muffler to get good access to run it along the E/R and reach between the fuel tank and holding tank.

Then out came the batteries, part of the battery compartment and the exhaust piping so I could get back into the corner. I laid down some old blankets and a piece of carpet on top of the battery trays for a little protection but still a few bruises.

Some of you have asked in the past if the elbow can be removed from the exhaust tube with the boat in the water. I have always said yes based on my measurements. Now I have the pictures. About 4"

New overboard discharge section, duckbills in the "T" pump and stubby piece between pump and discharge manifold.

Tomorrow I'll replace the piece from the discharge manifold to the pump-out deck fitting and reinstall the exhaust run with a new rubber elbow and 6" hose. The elbow looked a little ratty but is still pliable but seems "softer" than the new one. The hose looks good but I have the 6" hose so it's getting replaced. It's actually not that big of a deal to get back into that corner so the 3 1/2" bypass hose that looks to be in fine shape will live to be replaced at another time.

Edit to mention that the holes drilled through the stringers in the back for the overboard discharge line where it passes through to the section where the port rudder is and then through to the center section where the seacock is were plenty big enough for not only the hose but for the hose guard installed also. whew! that would have been a pita to drill those bigger.

Outstanding Mark! Did they smell or were you just bored?

The discharge hose to the seacock was in bad shape with cracks. Back in the corner it smelled a little funky. The stubby piece of hose from the discharge manifold to the T pump and the deck fitting pump out hose failed the damp rag test, probably because there’s always honey in those hoses. The rest were replaced because now I’ll never have to do it again (hopefully)

Hello all, I am new to this forum. We just purchased a 1997 400db sedan bridge this past July. I would appreciate any advice as to where I might find a cockpit bench seat for our Sea Ray. I hope this is the right forum to post this question. Thank you!

I removed mine and love the extra space. I'm storring it for if/when I decide to sell the boat, but may consider selling separately for a local pickup. Where are you located?
