Captain said he was looking at GPS. That makes perfect sense....going at high enough speed to impale boat on breakwall...adjacent to a marina.....and not looking outside????? Really?????

That happened at almost the exact same time!
It can be really easy to focus on the screens instead of the outside.
I used a dinner cruise last night to give my son some piloting experience. At one point we were head-on to a sail boat about 2 miles off and asked him what should he need to be paying attention to. He wasn't sure, so I asked what do you see that's dangerous right now. He looked down at the chart plotter and radar screens - wrong thing. I told him to get his eyes up and look out the windows for hazards.
