So I went away this weekend and when I got to where I was going I noticed my port rear cowl vent I guess it's called was loose. I noticed the silicone was missing on both sides and the top was dried out. Do I just put some silicone in there or is there a way to secure it? It flips up and down without it. Should I get gelcoat silicone that matches? Where?
Thanks...

My understanding is that these are just glued on. I would just reglue it, maybe with 5200.

Thanks,
If anyone has done it please let me know. If anything I'd like to get color matched silicone. I dont want to pull it off without knowing. I think a white bead would look wrong.

I'd be very careful running with it like that. There are several folks on this board and others looking for that part and spending big $ to have them custom made because they fell off.

Oh I know...I taped it when I ran home. I want to find out how to secure it good.

Take some pics of how you do this and what material(s) you used. There are a bunch of us that could easily find ourselves in the same situation.

There was a thread on here recently regarding how Sea Ray did this and what they used. I couldn't find it quickly but someone here may be able to. Now that I say that, with the failures that have been happening on these, maybe the original SR method isn't the smartest choice.

I have to do mine too. I did find this photos for what it looks like underneath.
Thanks for the picture. I'm thinking if I take it off, use 4200 to glue it down. I dont want it to be too permanent, if I ever had to take it off. Find some matching chalk to match the fiberglass to seal.

I Sea Ray tech that worked on building these boats told me it was a common issue and sometimes they put screws in them so it would not happen again. Not saying that is the best option but an option.

How does it look like it was held in from what you see so far?

If done properly you should see very little of it. Most of the adhesion is from the lower mounting pads. A small bead in the upper groove will suffice. Just make sure to clean off all the old adhesive so that the vent recesses properly.

Mine was reattached before I took delivery. Originally it was just reattached without cleaning the mount area well and it stuck out - enough I could get my finger under it and they tried to explain to me that that was normal until I showed them the before pictures. Then the idiot took it all off and thought he needed to fill the entire gap. I am still picking out silicone from non-skid around it from the overload. Just scratch my head wondering what people are thinking when they work on other peoples boats.

Kevin,
It did have a small bead of silicone around the entire panel. It was small and recessed, but was there. The sides are missing. The top part of the silicone is all cracked and dried out. I did some research and found this company http://colorrite.publishpath.com/color-sil .They said if I send them a sample they will match it. They said they go off sherwin and williams paint colors so get a swatch and they will match that. The panel has a couple cracks on it and was thinking of taking it off to get it fixed while I was at it. What should I re-attach it with? 5200? 4200? What do you think?

I would think mounting the bottom pads with 4200 would be more than adequate. Based on the surface area you could probably get away with a good BoatLife adhesive too. I just resealed the deck round portlights with boatlife and unfortunately they do not have an off white so the white is a little brighter but clean looking. For sealing the top seam I think the GE Silicone almond was a close match - I used it on my 260DA.

I went to the paint store and found a perfect match in color. I'll send it out to the link above and see how it turns out. as for the panel, I think i'm going to adhere it on both sides to get me through the season , then take it off and send it out to get fixed. That way they can take there time and get the color right. I think there 3 weeks out anyway.

This fell off my boat in my backyard, I barely touched it I was so lucky I didn’t lose it while running. Came right off in my hands. I cleaned all the old adhesive out as stated above and used 4200 on the underside to re secure it. Then I just used a thin bead of bathroom silicon on top to seal it down and make it look nice.
