2019 Lake Michigan Rendezvous

We came back from south haven to grand haven in following seas last weekend
Waves started at 2 to 3's and by the time we hit GH it was 5 to 6
Still this was not a bad ride (we have a 38 Sundancer) running 3800 RPMs and going anywhere from 19 to 28 MPH depending on what part of the wave we were riding :)

I took this outside of Holland that morning

Good lord...3800 is haulin' the mail in 5-6's. Did you get her out of the water at all? Did you ever aerate the props on the wavefronts?

I encountered some gnarly conditions coming back from Saugatuck two years back in a 340, big following sea, and I found I could not go above hull speed without launching the boat, aerating the props, or both. It was quite unnerving. She came outta the water one time on plane, I pooped myself, and then slowed to 9-10kts for the remainder of the trip....:)

Mike let me know if you are going by Ludington I will be leaving Ludington some time in the morning heading to GH, they said today I could get a slip to call in the morning.

This weather may be throwing a complete wrench in my plans to meet up with you guys. Right now it looks like I need to head north tomorrow AM if I have any chance at saving my Leland trip. Friday afternoon and Saturday will be a hot mess out on the lake.

If you guys end up someplace in Grand Haven tonight for a beer/dinner I'd sure like to swing by and say hi. I also owe Spike for the beer (plus a hefty delivery fee)!

Ughh...best laid plans. But at least we're all boating!

The boat never left the water. We aerated the props one time with an interesting wide and tall wave but otherwise the trip was amazingly comfortable

Dinner plans is a pretty general term. Anything from hamburgers to prime rib. I can make a recommendation based on what everyone wants.

As Stee has pointed out there are slips available at Grand Isle 616-842-9330

I will be on the VIP dock @ Grand Isle.

With Saturday looking dicey, not sure about my dinghy. My guests probably aren’t up for any wild rides in it. Probably won’t bring it but will Uber around.

Are we going to do a “Raft up” on Saturday? Or will the heavy winds make that uncomfortable?

Steve, back by Grand Isle and into Grand Haven will be 100% dinghy-able in any kind of weather. We're on the river, not the lake, zero issues with waves. I'm sure uber will work in Grand Haven but the dinghy ride from Grand Isle into Grand Haven is actually quite enjoyable...you only have to duck under one bridge :)

Spring lake/Smith’s Bayou is one of the great benefits to boating in Grand Haven. When Lake M is too rough we have 7 mile long Spring Lake to boat on. There is also 12+ miles of Grand River to cruise. A raft off on Smith’s Bayou is a tradition for all local boaters. It’s also where the 400+ boats of flotilla takes place.

The Kirby, Tip A Few, Snug Harbor and a new microbrew downtown (name escapes me) are all great watering holes. This weekend is the first few days of the coast guard festival. Being in municipal will attract a ton of foot traffic. As previously mentioned, there is a back channel for dinghys from Grand Isle. It meanders through Grand Valley Marina and Ryzinga marina. There is enough clearance under the 31 bridge but be sure to duck. There is also reflectors on the clear route through the rail road trestle. Once you get past the marinas you can go up on plane until you shoot out into downtown. All of this is visible on your charts. There is a dinghy dock next to the charter boats.
