Official 290 Sundancer Thread

Another question.
Have any of you installed trim tab position indicators?
Or is it supposed to display on the Smartcraft gauges?
TIA

I'm also debugging a water leak in bilge. I also started by shop vac'd all water out which also sort of dried everything. Then went down with my camera phone and video a number of spots. I basically had the phone under the oil pan which is quite difficult. You should be able to at least identify if its a transom assembly, or coming from somewhere entirely different.

I just ordered a cheap chinese borroscope camera that connects to your phone and planning to see if I can better figure out where the leak is. I can see it leaking off the bottom of the exhaust y pipe but that is simply the lowest point so not necessarily coming from there. The wifi borroscope doesn't give the fastest video refresh rates, but hoping it will help me out.

Thanks Pyro. Let me know what you find. My troubleshooting is more difficult because I do not keep it in the water and I have to spend time under there on the lake when I should be having fun. Guess i'll have to plan a "troubleshooting trip"

Hi Solly, That doesn’t sound fun. But here’s something you may enjoy, I installed Bennett Auto Trim Pro with position indicators. https://bennetttrimtabs.com/
About $550 and easy install connects to current tab system. It’s not perfect, but it works great automatically adjusting tabs as you go with great position sensors. Check it out on you tube.

All the best,

Have any of you guys replaced the O-rings on the Airmar transducer mounted centered on the keel in the bilge?
I am having a hard time locating any info.

I finally got around to installing my LED bulbs in the cabin, only to find out the G4 bulbs that I bought based on others suggestions were incorrect for the reading lights.

These reading lights do NOT take G4 bulbs. I borrowed this pic from a previous post. They were originally 921LL bulbs rated at 18 Watts (1.5A)! I purchased these LED which are excellent. The light is near identical to the original, including color temperature. If anything they are maybe a tiny bit brighter, but barely can tell side by side.

I think there was 5 to replace. To remove the lens, you have to take a tiny jewelers screwdriver and pop out the front. There is a very small opening you put the screwdriver in and pop it out. It is not on the outside of the housing as you might imagine.

I also did the bulb above the sink. I twisted the outer cover and pulled down. This bulb is a G4.

I forgot to look in the head to replace that one.

Another project. Installed VesselView mobile. Super easy to do. Remove the top panel with the gauges. This also gave me the opportunity to tighten one or two of the gauges that were starting to rotate.

There are three smartcraft hubs. In the top right of the pic there are two stacked on top of each other. Bottom was labeled port, top was starboard. Vesselview instructions said to install into starboard side, so I plugged it into the spare port on top left. I'm not sure what the other smartcraft hub is on the bottom left of the pic.

I screwed it into the top right corner.

Turned key on, LEDs lit and connected via the app. The app is pretty poor design, but manageable. Helpful to see fuel economy (which is also available on smartcraft digital gauges) and error codes.

For those wondering about Bennett Auto Trim Pro with indicators, I installed last year and really like them takes a while to calibrate and I occasionally need to adjust manually but all in all work great. Install was easy.

Audio upgrade time. I replaced OEM Clarion with a Clarion M608 and new wired remote on dash. Now its time for JL speakers with sub. Question, has anyone mounted speakers in the arch above the 290SD arch speakers current location? The oem location is at ear level on port side seat (too loud). Per other recommendations I plan on mounting 10” sub on back side of helm pedestal.

AND just replaced all the I-Glass. Great Lakes Boat Top is THE BEST. I order with hull ID and color. Simply installed snaps and everything is new again. Looks awesome!!

About one month of boating left then off to storage for another long winter

That's great info! It's time for me to throw out the old Clarion also. I assume the M608 is plug and play?? I'm afraid I have amp or wiring problems as the left side plays intermittent and fades in and out.
I'm thinking about the Auto Trim Pro myself. I have never had a boat where I have to use the trim tabs so much.
Thanks again

Yep, its plug and play and a perfect fit. The remote MW1 fits perfect too but I will need to pull a new 8 pin cable to the M608. I’m having same fading issue so I will plan on replacing amp and all speakers, adding two speakers facing swim platform.

Have you looked into an adapter that will allow the original remotes to be used? If that is not possible, where did you find the 8 pin cable?
TIA

Never mind, just saw the cables on Crutchfield

I've been debating speaker options as well. I also am not a big fan of the speakers at ear level in the arch or the side firing speakers. I disconnected two in front since port is behind the cabin door which is always open and therefore blocking it.

I have been investigating installing one or two speakers in radar arch firing down. There is easily enough room for one in the middle, to the stern of the access hole, but you won't have any stereo balance. I have been measuring the depth to the outside of the arch lights for two JL MX650 which require 2-3/4" mounting depth. From what I can tell there seems to be 2-1/4". I cut a dowel to different lengths remove the arch light temporarily and try to judge the depth. From what I can tell I should be able to get away with 1/2" CNC'd speaker spacers that you can buy made of Starboard made for MX650s. They also sell 3/4" and 1". I think 1" is too noticeable, but I think I can live with 1/2", and worst case 3/4" if my measurements are wrong. But measuring the depth is very difficult and only sure way is to start drilling pilot holes and measuring depth. I just can't seem to find the courage yet. Likely a winter project.

Anyone heard when the new 290 will be available in the States? Launched in the EU in late 2018.

Well guys...After 11 years with my beloved 290 I have contracted 2footitis. So I must bid you all farewell on the 290 thread. Love the boat but family and grandchildren have grown so it was either leave some on the dock or go bigger. I found (I think) a nice 320. 6.2 ltr. with Vdrive. Wish me luck on docking..I was getting pretty good with that single 8.1 I must say!

I did mine a few years back. A must is dynamat in the arch otherwise you will have an echo. Also I put the sub under the seat opposite the helm. I added 2 speakers halfway up the arch and a Rockford Fosgate AMP. Perfection....

I bought the Bennett auto trim tab system. It has been in for 5 years..I gave up on using it as they were slow to react and I could do it better and faster.
