Official 280 Sundancer Thread

So at least on the 2001 there isn't any adjustment on the wheel side. It's a the wheel attaches to tilt shaft that drives a pinion gear in back of the helm that then moves a rack that actuates a cable going to the transom where the power steering assists.

As far as I can tell there is no adjustment for the rack and pinion, and there is slight play of movement.

How much play do you have?
it seems like several inches

Move wheel several inches with little/no resistance
I think you'll have diagnosis more...

You're gonna want to check in the bilge and see if the steering is moving with the wheel input, ie no dead play. If it is, next time it's out of the water check the out drive and see if it moves on it's own( excessively), if it does you have the worn steering pin. If it doesn't check the cables and rack in the helm.

Hi Everyone, I am trying to replace our old Raymarine 210 VHF radio with a new standard horizon but so far I haven't been able to figure out how to get behind the existing radio to remove the flush mount screws. The screws that were on the face plate didn't seem to allow it to be removed. Just to the right of the radio is a fiberglass baffle preventing me from reaching it through the starboard radar arch half moon access panel and I can't get to it from under the cockpit sink. I haven't seen another 2002 280da online that has the radio in this location so I am stumped.

That's a tough location... You can either get it from aft birth but you'd need REALLY long arms and you have to remove a few internal panels. OR remove the throttle console, you can just remove but leave it all connected.

The attached picture gives you an idea what's behind it the healm is unbolted in this but you don't need do that(it's the only pic I had) just remove the throttle console.

getting too the backside of the 280 panel is pretty easy. There is a door and the bottom of the dash which you see in "Ferris' picture - easy enough to crawl into and remove and replace the radio. No need to remove the throttle body panel or anything else.

Also I made my new backing plate out of 1/4" starboard. Let me know if you want pics - I do have them in an earlier post.

I think if his radio was mounted in the standard location above the steering wheel he wouldn't have even needed to post asking for advice. Check out his photo and the comments he made; his radio is in a more complicated location. It looks like the advice from Ferris is spot on...

Thanks for the fast replies. Ferris, I don't think I'd be able to reach it from the mid-bearth starboard wall. I found the 3 screws that hold that in place but it looks like every other panel in that compartment overlaps and would have to come out first.

Any idea where I could get color matched caulk after I replace the throttle console. I've read that it is Bostik 960 SR in the Zephyr color but it looks like that has been discontinued by Bostik.

Captn TJ, thanks for the tip but my radio is mounted on the starboard side just ahead of the radar arch. I saw your pics on your install and it looks great but I have a chartplotter in that space. It sure would be a lot easier if I could reach it from the helm access panel.

There threads on here about caulk matching I can't help you there other than suggesting search. If it's a big deal to you maybe you can drill out the flush screws instead?

Changed my navigation lights to the marinebeam LED's. I get an audible click in the engine room and the green lights on the switch pads dim when I turn them on. Is this something I need to be concerned about?
Thanks

hmm interesting. You might want to ask the guys at Marineneam - they're very responsive. FYI I changed all of the cockpit lights plus nav lights from Marinebeam and don't have that issue.

I took everything including the tracks off to try to unstick mine, they would move to a certain point and then jam. I was never able to get mine to move freely!
It seems my sunbed tracks are stuck as well, I've tried everything to get it to move! I even removed the cushion and tried pulling the tracks with a vice-grip but it won't budge. How do I remove the tracks from the boat; the screws to the stern is behind a cushion on the wall, how can I remove that one? Thanks!

Has anyone ever put an LED bulbs in the existing spot light? My bulb blew the other night and I need to replace it......rather replace with LED
Thanks

My name is Ed from Rochester, NY you all have helped me in the past with some problems with my 2007 280 Sundancer twin 4.3 Mercs. I am having a problem again. Everything seems to point to fuel tank anti siphon valves, but i cannot find a part number I contacted Sea Ray customer support and they could not help me. Any ideas?

When you say that they weren't able to help... did they not know the answer or were they not able to provide you with a part number for the anti-siphon valve. The reason I ask is because you don't have one. Instead, there's an electrical actuated fuel cutoff switch. Just follow your fuel line and you'll see it.

If you've narrowed down the suspects to (what you thought was) an AS valve, I take it you verified that by running with the fuel cap off? And if so, you had no issues when you did that?

I have not tried to run it with the fuel cap off. I read about AS Valve causing the issue I am experiencing, both engines not going over 2500 rpm.

If i run with the fuel cap off and it is okay what does that point to?

And if it doesn't correct what else should I look for?
Thank You for your help.
