Grills

Magma Newport on the pedestal on swim platform, worked excellent on my 280DA

I am still looking for a good electric grill. It makes cooking in the marina more friendly than running up and back from the slip.

I would also like one that's able to be used with our generator running. The magma looks interesting but the reviews don't seem that good.

I like the Kenyon but they seem better suited for built-in use as the portable is designed for home use where you can't have an regular grill with a flame.

Any ideas?

Magma Newport purchased in 04. Keep a good metal polish on it and it will serve you well. After 14 years we sold it for 150.00 and it worked like a champ! ( reason for selling was we sold the 450 ).It had a rod mount that worked great also.
Good luck,

Tommy

We have the Magma cheaper rectangular one mounted on a Magma rod holder mount. Love the mount, hate the grill...too hot on one end. Best dealt with by not leaving it. Have plans to modify the rod holder mount and try something custom when I get around to it.

Are the Magma Infared grills better? They have the plates with a million tiny holes in them.

We bought the Magma Catalina ten years ago. Seems to do ok but it does get too hot if you take your eye off of it.

I used to use a Weber q series but found it was too big and heavy. Plus I had no place to store it. (05 340 dancer) I did some shopping and just picked this up this season. We are very happy with it, can be cleaned easy, easy to transport... and absolutely best of all it folds up and fits Under the cockpit bench seat. So I never have to take it off the boat

Agreed. No way I’m lighting a fire on a boat.

Magma Newport for me with the rod holder mount. Works great. Not worried about the flame on the boat. If I have ignitable fuel fumes at BBQ height I would know it.

Look at the little electric Weber.
I’ve got a round Magma that I don’t like and I’m thinking along the lines of eventually replacing it with a Weber.
I like the idea of electric because no wind worries on our typically windy LI afternoons and we can use it at the dock at places like Tobay. I usually fire up the genny at meal time on the hook in Zack’s Bay anyway so we don’t really need a propane grill.
Now I’ve just got to get my tired old lazy a$$ motivated enough to run an electric receptacle back inside the trunk so I can use an electric grill with my Grill a Mount back on the swim platform....

That's what i was looking at. But it's hard to find quality reviews in it. BTW, how do you like the grill a mount?

I like it a lot. I’ve got the rod holder mount but it puts the grill right over my fuel fill and in a bad spot in general so the Grill a Mount on the grab rail on the trunk was a great choice. Grilling on the platform is best for me.
I think it was Dave (dtfeld) that rigged up a Grill a Mount with a cutting board and then mounted a little propane Weber to it. If not him, then somebody else on the forum did it.
I really liked that setup when I saw it. I’ve been holding off on it though because I don’t think I want another propane grill and the only exterior outlet I have is up by the cabin door.
Putting an outlet in the trunk is on my “to do” list.
Overall, an electric grill just seems to make more sense for me.

I got this nexgrill from Costco. So far I love the grill and it doesn’t get hot under it. Also it’s from Costco so if you don’t like it you can return it

I need a grill also but I might look at an inexpensive table top grill. The previous owner replaced the salon carpet with one large piece covering the table base in my 400DB. I had a wooden base constructed so I can use the table and now I can move it out to the cockpit. Voila a nice place to cook.

Someone I know used this grill from Costco and mounted it on a white painted plywood base then a table base on the swim platform. It was removable and storable. It worked well and was a nice large grill. It is not too high so it worked well in the wind. Its stainless mostly.

I have had a couple of Magma's over the years. For me they just don't seem to last forever. My current is almost 2 years old, it was one of their less expensive options (180 or so). Basic grill, does not have push button lighting. I decided to not spend money for more expensive options - rather just replace when it got tired. Guessing I have another year or two before replacement.

We grill a lot. This serves the purpose.

I do have the bag, which I think it awesome. I keep spare propane in the bag with the grill. My situation I can't do the traditional rod holder mounting in the boat. No place that does not have a rail on top that I could do a traditional rod holder. Found a rod holder that attaches to the rail that works.

We grill upstairs on the area at the back of the Fly Bridge. I have a dock box secured to the floor which I store the grill in. Bag stays in the dock box, I take the grill out - cook, then put it back in the bag. Don't have any issues with drip or spatters.

How do you clean up all of the crud on the grill itself?

I agree it’s better to buy less expensive grills and get a new one every couple years. Thats my plan too

Oven cleaner works for the baked on stuff if you don't clean regularly. I find that using automotive degreasers like Simple Green to clean it up after each use goes a long way to reduce the major crud buildup.
