460 DA Owners Thread

Question for you all regarding the catch/sump basin under the salon floor. Even though I clean it out, we seem to always get that smell that backs up through the sink in the galley. Our has a poor design, they have the pump and the switch on two different levels, so no matter what, its never pumped dry. I may just move the switch to help the cause? any suggestions for what to treat it with that lasts/works. Other than 5 gallons of bleach :)

Josh so I can assume it's a bad gauge at the helm correct since gauge in engine room is working?

The previous owner of our 460 put a though hull fitting for the kitchen sink this definitely prevents smell from sump

It's likely the gauge or the wiring. You could swap the gauge with the working one to know for sure.

I switched gauges today and the gauge works on the starboard engine.

I know this sounds silly but re-terminate the connectors on the gauge and try that. The Searay gauges are crap and they fail often. I would say replace the gauge but check your wiring since you’re saying it works correctly on the other engine.

If you put the good gauge in the bad side does it do the same?

Edit... you know I may have Mis-spoke. Do you have smart craft? I have all mechanical engines and wasn’t thinking about smartcraft folks.

As far as the shower sump I have 2 solutions. First, I second the comment about running the galley sink directly overboard. It’s easy to do and it’s a 1 1/2 in thru hull and hose. That keeps the smelly rotten stuff from getting in the sump to begin with. You will also need a plug for the original hose so don’t forget that when you’re ordering.

Secondly you will have to take the sump box top off and clean it but after this time simply treat the grey water with no flex digestor when you leave the boat and it won’t smell ever. I fill up the sink in the head and put some noflex in and drain it right before we leave.

Cleaning the shower sump is about the nastiest job on the boat so get ready and you will be convinced to not do it again.

If he has a 2001 boat he would not have smart craft. I think you are correct in having him check the connectors since the problem does not appear to be the gauge.

All mechanical

Ok. Report back once you determine the connections and switch sides on the gauges. I’ll bet it’s a gauge though.

Regarding the shower sump in the 460 searay. My float was constantly getting stuck overflowing etc. I replaced the entire unit with a whale sump unit with an external whale pump bought from defender marine. The float is electronic built into the lid not mechanical like a rule. It also runs 30 seconds longer to completely drain the unit. I did this upgrade three years ago and I never had another problem with the whale sump. The sump has 8 inlets that was easy to adapt to searay. The whole design is a huge upgrade.

Okay so today I had a little time to dig into temp gauge issue.there are definitely 2 temp sending units. I located the one that goes directly to the gauge on the engine. Now trying to locate the one for the helm gauge

I knew of only one. It is right behind the alternator.

That might be the helm one. The one I found on the port engine is right behind the temp and oil gauge on the engine to the aft side of the after cooler

Just listed my ‘03 on CSR
I’ll see if it can sell here versus trading in or selling through broker

I have been doing this too and it takes all the smell away and has kept it clean. I also routed the galley sink to go out the port side of the boat.

That teak looks awesome!!! I think it would be good to go ahead and do the shower as well!
